I believe the basis of the appeal was that Russell told them not to move it but they moved it anyway, and that the race had already been red-flagged by that point. I don't think it would have been asking too much to let him take the restart start from the pit lane, given that he left the car initially to check on the safety of another driver.
logical. Therefore the FIA will reject it on principle ;)

Nevermind that Russel told the marshals not to move his car.

A few pictures (neither of them mine) demonstrating the scale of the accident:

The roll hoop looks to have disintegrated completely on impact, so the halo would have been the only thing keeping Zhou’s head from the gravel/barriers.

Oh, definitely. The halo earned it's keep between this and the F2 race.

it is an awful accident - the safety features F1 have introduced seem to have saved the drivers life. I was a bit against the halo as I didn't see how it could work but this accident without it. doesn't bear thinking about.

I thought Zhou was dead. Honestly. What is the roll hoop breaking/grinding/wearing off ( the illuminous flash you can see in the video above) I thought has his helmet bashing along the track.
I was worried that with a car skidding upside down with the roll hoop damaged or missing the halo would act as a sort of plough and dig into the gravel. Presumably they researched into that possibility?

Several technical types on socials are disputing that the roll loop failed. They suggest it worked initially and was destroyed by being subjected to forces above F1 test levels.

I am sure they do. Digging into the kitty litter was the least of the issues in that accident tbh.

agree!

I was actually at the race. Sat at Club Corner, so the accident just was out of sight, but I could just about tell that “something” had happened. You could hear the shock from the whole crowd when they eventually showed the replay. Was a great race though. Probably even better than the last British Grand Prix that I went to, I 2019.

I think it is pretty immaterial whether or not the roll hoop failed outside of test spec. If it did then the spec ought to be raised. The hoop failed in its basic job whichever way you look at it.

I think they were saying it was slightly more complicated than that. I am also, from a non technical point of view, not sure it did fail or fail totally. It took the initial impact and several subsequent impacts and protected the driver.

I am sure they will if the lessons learnt review shows that is required. In any event it is worth looking at the style of roll hoop. Alfa have a fin type. There is a lot to look at and see what can be changed to improve things.

Accidents aside, and I am glad that all drivers involved in incidents are OK and live to tell the tale but..

My god, the race was FANTASTIC!

Best race of the season thus far

The Zhou crash looked terrible and his apparent lack of serious injuries is definitely as a result of the car safety and halo, however it was an ironically good job that the race was red-flagged at that point as there could have been possibly even more serious injury or death due to the "environmental" idiots who broke onto the track on the first lap and sat down on the Wellington straight. It doesn't bare thinking about how that could have ended if the cars were travelling at full speed down there and had hit one of these morons

No need for the quotes around environmental - the purpose of their protest was environmental. They are idiots though, no disagreement there.

it isn't the first time people have invaded the track but they are pretty stupid to do so!

Northamptonshire Police twittered about this on Thursday - they were clearly expected!

Here's a video I shot from the Club Corner grandstand of the start. You can just about see it all kicking off at the first corner in the distance....

TBH I didn't know exactly what had happened until they showed the replay much later.

It was over the news in the days leading up to the grand prix.

the gantry and pit bridge just blocked your view.

Decent seats mind.
Yep. I actually booked my seat 3 years ago! LOL! It was only my second time at a grand prix. Last one I went to was the 2019 British Grand Prix, with my brother, but just for race day. This time I went alone for the Saturday and the Sunday. I don't have a car so I stayed in Milton Keynes and used the shuttle bus service. I was very impressed with it.

Someone in the grandstand I was in got even luckier. They interviewed Lewis and George standing right in front of it, and during this they told us to look under our seats for something that had placed there, and the person whose seat it was won a prize. I can't recall what the prize was but I'm sure it must have been good.

I did have a great view of the F2 crash though.

they need to advertise that service more. The Silverstone traffic is notorious!
If you go on the Silverstone website and look under how to get there for the grand prix, there is an option for buses.. It did seem to be very well used. We actually got stuck in traffic on the way back on the Sunday. Journey is normally around 40 minutes, but it actually took about an hour and a half to get back to Milton Keynes. Going, on Saturday and the Sunday, was a breeze though, and also coming out on the Saturday, once we'd cleared the first few roads leading from the circuit. I'd definitely use it again if I went another time.

Not as good as Monza: Train direct from Milan Centrale to a special station at the circuit. Got some red pen action on the way to the GP ;)

Ted Kravitz can't have looked at the website since the first few minutes of his Saturday qualifying notebook consisted of a rant about the traffic with no mention of the existence of this service... o_O

Yeah, I watched both Notebooks. Sky handily put them on their YouTube channel, so I was able to watch them on the big TV in my hotel room using the Firestick I took with me.

I read on a Motorsport forum about security people being threatened and a few duffed up by people wanting to get on the track while the track was still 'live' at the finish.

Doubly ironic given sky were publicising their net-zero efforts all weekend!

I didn't notice it this year but during last year's race there was an amusing sight when you could see a New Routemaster trundling along in the background while the F1s were roaring around in front.

I did see one guy get onto the track shortly after the race finished, and get chased down the pit straight (until his pursuers seemed to give up), who looked like he was going to do a full on streak - the woman sitting next to me seemed to think so - but he stopped at taking his top off from what I saw.

I also saw a bunch of army guys run across the track towards the pits after that (also with an exclamation about it from the lady next to me "They're bringing the army in!" or words to that effect). Not sure what that was about.

There were at least a couple of London buses running along from what I saw. I was sat there wondering what they were for.
