No the online tests you do at home will not be a lost life if you don't pass them...

Woah wait, really? The ones you sit at home?

That was my response lol.
Seemingly only a life with the companies who use those specific tests but I was under the impression that the online/at home tests didn't count against you and use a life up.

They aren't a life as such but I believe if you sit them with TOC1 and failed one/both, you can't sit them again for six months with anyone else. Thus if TOC2 also use them (not all do) you'd be ruled out of that assuming you're going for both TOCs around the same time.

The OPC will pick up on it and tell you you'll have to withdraw from one of the applications.

I found out today I failed the vse with MTR. It just says I can't apply to MTR for another 6 months

So my understanding is if you apply to a TOC that doesn't have the VSE as part of its process (it's not one of the core tests) then you're fine. If the TOC you apply to does use it, they will pick up on the fact you've done it previously and not let you do it again if it's within 6 months and will take your previous score.

Well if my first attempt at group bourdon is anything to go by, I won’t need to worry about being on holiday when the dates for Stage 2 are given out!!

Hi Stigy,

Congratulations on passing. I Recently did my sjt and vse with MTR crossrail and didnt make it though. How many errors did you make on part 2 and 3 if any? I made 0 errors in part 1, 3 errors in part 2 and 4 errors in part 3.

Do you think they are looking for zero errors on part 1 and 2?
Hi Trent,

I made maybe one or two errors in part 1 and 2 (at least one was due to my phone ringing on the computer as they’re linked and I lost the screen lol). Part three I know I made several errors but not sure how many. I think it’s as much to do about composure than not making errors, for example, I think I redeemed myself okay and got back on track after making a couple of errors that would otherwise have been easy to lose control of if that makes sense? They’re definitely not looking for clean runs I don’t think. Bearing in mind you’re using a mouse at home, it’s quite tricky even if you react quickly enough (on part three at least, dashing from one side of the screen to the other).

Thanks Martin, I’m using an Apple Mac so the tool won’t work. I will fire up the old laptop
Google 'Virtualbox' if you want to run it on a Mac. It's free, but you might need to pay a couple of quid for a windows licence if you don't have a serial. I use the tool on a MacBook fine using this method.

Out of interest what will happen on the day of the assessment? I've been making notes about each of the tests that we'll be doing on the day, will it really take 4 hours to complete them all? I've never done them before so any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Paul, can I ask where you got the online practise tests from to get these statistics? would be good to use a similar tool so I can monitor progress and see where i'm up to with it! Cheers

I think 4-hours is the longest it'll take. I've sat them once before with my current TOC (and passed....But stupidly left it too long now I'm on my last life :() and it didn't take that long, maybe nearer 2-hours, but each company is different in the ways they do things so who knows?

The statistics came from using the Group Bourdon software from this website. You just click "save stats" at the bottom right corner on the programs window

Another question, for the DFFT how much info will be provided when we sit the test? Looking through the attatchments on the email there's a lot of technical information, surely we're not expected to remember all the information without having some sort of guide :s

We will get very similar info to what’s in the practice- it’s not meant to be a memory test :)

All th info required will be provided for that test, so as has been said it’ll be similar to the practice material. The only memory test aspect of the assessments I guess will just be the rules and procedures part (where you’re given a laminated passage to read whilst the same passage is read out on a tape recorder, then you gt five minutes and after that answer questions without said laminated passage).

Yesterday I got through to DB's assessment day, today I've received an invite to Freightliners. Can I even sit these a week apart?

I would definitely ask the question as it does touch on it in the invite email . .

'If you have sat the assessment process previously with another train organisation, we will be aware of this and advise on the day of what assessment tools you will need to complete. In addition, if you have attended an assessment centre with any other train organisation since applying to Freightliner please do notify us immediately of this to ensure that you do not sit the same tests twice within a 6 month period. Please also be aware that be re-sitting the assessment tools required for the Freightliner recruitment process, these results will overwrite any existing results that you have for other organisations, thereby in some situations your existing ‘pass’ may become a ‘fail’. If you are concerned with this then I suggest that you do not re-sit the process for Freightliner and instead withdraw your application – please inform me if this is the case.'
