My politically astute mate suggests Wellington
Good shout! Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington was Prime Minister between 1828-30 and in 1834, both times as a Tory. But not the answer I'm looking for.

Russell 1860s ish. Whig?
Circling around the right answer / period, but no, not John Russell, 1st Earl Russell (1865-66) whom I have down as a Liberal.

He was also a Whig-Liberal Prime Minister between 1846-52, as briefly mentioned up thread.

Lord Aberdeen? A vague notion.
Is the right answer.

The decidedly less than charismatic George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, was the "Peelite' Prime Minister of a coalition government between 1852-55 before the administration got into difficulties following the outbreak of the Crimean War.

Believe that the Peelite political party ceased to be in c. 1859. Joined with the 'Whigs' and the 'Radicals' to form the Liberal Party.

N.B This particular question was sourced from the normally reliable "Hutchinson Factfinder". Contact them if you don't agree with the answer!

Anyhoo, John Griffiths, you are elected Prime Minister of the Quiz party.

I'm guessing somewhat -- is the link, supermarket chains? Have an inkling that the German Albrecht family, were the founders of Aldi; and is Rose maybe half of "Waitrose"? No idea about the other two.

Stockwell anything to do with Tesco?

Think that some of their modern day own brand produce is labelled "Stockwell's".

Three out of four. Yes, the Albrecht Brothers founded Aldi, then split up over whether to sell cigarettes so there are now Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud (I think the UK is part of Aldi Sud). Rose was a founder of Waite, Rose & Taylor (Taylor conveniently sold out after a few years). And T E Stockwell was a tea merchant and supplier to Jack Cohen in Cohen's early days as a trader post WWI. He - Cohen, that is - wanted a brand name for his tea so came up with TESCO from Stockwell's initials and the first two letters of Cohen.

So - Asquith. What might that suggest?

That's interesting - I didn't know that. Perhaps somethin f2f to do with their centenary last year.
Have just checked. Packet of their cashew nuts is labelled both "T.E. Stockwell & Co. (since 1924)" and "Exclusively at Tesco".

Tesco Stores Ltd, Welwyn Garden City AL7 1GA given as the UK contact address on the back of the pack.

Asda was formed by the combination of a food retail company founded by the Asquith family and Associated Dairies, so AS reflects both, but Asda's website does attribute the AS to Asquith and the DA to Associated Dairies.

Well done all. As Calthrop got two, he gets the trolley of opportunity.

Thank you. I know that the name of Tesco as a shop did not t get used until the first shop in (I think) 1929; before that it was all stalls at outdoor and indoor markets and arcades.

According to the "Grocer" magazine, the "TE Stockwell & Co" brand name was resurrected by Tesco in 2018 following a revamp of their "value" range.

I'll also pass on any invitation to be Quizmaster-in-chief just now after my somewhat challenging short period in charge earlier.

Excellent, I see that there's just been a grab for power by Jona26.

So is Tesco TES(tockwell&)CO, or was TE Stockwell created as an in-house brand?
