Slightly off-thread, in the Specsavers advert where the girl kisses the wrong man at first, my wife asks if the station and the train in the advert are real or just a film set? Can anyone on the forum help, please?

My first thought on seeing that advert some months ago is that it is somewhere on the Continent; looks like a tram or tram-train* rather than a train? Feels a bit German or scandinavian?

*Very cumbersome phrase; how about we invent a new, much easier, word like "traim" for these things?<D

Yes, it's a continental style train like the Stadler FLIRT or Bombardier TALENT. Different body profiles to British trains. Walk-through carriages are the norm.

My wife passes her thanks to you for answering her query, but wonders why Specsavers had to go abroad to make their advert.

It may be cheaper. It certainly is if you're a bank and want somebody to give your customers credit card advice. ;)

I agree, a lot of proffesionality, which is lacking in a lot of adverts today.

Definately still the best one.

As well as showing a good scope of railway operations it shows a sense of national purpose. A clearer version can be seen on :

Sick of the adverts that are made to be annoying so you remember how bad they are. The new East Coast one is alright (to herald the changes to 1st class), but if they had done something similar to that BR one then it would have looked a whole load better.

One of my favourite non-railway adverts at the minute is the More Than Freeman one!

I too was wondering about the Specsavers advert.

I know this thread was meant to be about TV but I do like EMT's paper adverts, nice simple style.

One of the more modern adverts I like is the Virgin Trains one which is interspersed with train footage from black and white films.

The choo choo choo trainline adverts just make me cringe.

It is now the MIDDLE OF JULY and the damn thing is STILL on television playing the most annoying "musical" tripe I have ever heard, coupled with what looks like The National Ballet of Moldova dressed in gold lycra, fronted by two "nerds". I know that this has been a marketing play dreamed up by some advertising agency, but don't you think that it has been "done to death"?.....OR SHOULD BE<(<(

The other advert with music (admittedly not to do with trains) that I could never stand was that of CSL Sofas, with some female singer warbling on about "Try to make it easy" in the most irritating fashion. At least their latest adverts have spared us from her "whinging" caterwauling.

There is no way that I would ever consider using The Trainline for anything.

Never seen a CSL advert; yet alone even heard of them!

A-choochoochoooo get ripped off by the trainline.... a-choochoochooo tickets for trains that don't exist. :(

I hate it. I really, really hate it. It's like audio spamming.

How can you not have seen the sofa adverts for all the companies? They're on the TV constantly, plus in magazines, newspapers and on billboards - they are everywhere! Most furniture adverts are dire. The only remotely interesting ones are for IKEA, and that is saying something!

The trainline are annoying in general. Yet, for so many people it's the first site they visit when looking for train tickets becuase of the adverts and brand recognition.

If you think "choo choo choo" is bad then this advert that CrossCountry ran prior to the Cheltenham Festival in 2010 surely beats thetrainline for sheer crap-ness.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szh-LrYkmpM

Filmed at Reading where if you want to get to Cheltenham with CrossCountry you'd have to buy split tickets and travel via Birmingham.

That said, a cigar smoking, jewellery wearing, English eccentric advertising train services..... now, where have I seen that before?

It's true. There really are very few original ideas in advertising!

I've seen other sofa adverts such as the likes of DFS (which are awful) and IKEA etc. Just thinking where are CSL based? Maybe they only advertise in their area - I've never seen any.

According to their website, most stores are in the North of England but there are stores in Stoke, Lincoln, Nottingham and Brent Cross (North London).

Probably explains it. Many local firms and TOCs do that too.

Stoke-upon-Trent is my nearest then, if I ever had the urge to go there :P

I think that you have chosen a very good example here, with "The Railway Children" at the start then proceeding through some reminiscences of great films in conjoined and seamless clips, included "Some like it hot" to name but one.

This advert shows how a really good advertising agency can have very creative ideas.

have you seen that latest CSL advert where the sales person is trying to act all cool and trendy with the black customer and ends up making himself look mentally retarded? That ad is so, so bad and makes me want to smash the TV up. Still, these sofa companies must make millions and millions with all the advertising they do. People must buy a new sofa every week. (and with the quality of them, I wouldn't be at all surprised)
