And some of them are ex-loco hauled, rather than HST spec.

I'd assume the 143's will stay with GWR until December, to cover the loss of the 153's to TfW.

Yes that would make sense otherwise they would end up having a serious stock shortage if they sent the 143s off lease at the same time as the 153s. Plus Bristol still doesn’t quite have enough Turbos at the moment so Cardiff-Portsmouth can’t go 100% Turbo at the minute and they are still having their mods fitted. Slam door HSTs will be very useful over the coming months until more power door sets arrive.

Not sure that is the case with anything that is coming out of the GWR long-distance HST fleet. I believe all the conversions in 2012 or thereabouts to create more trailers for FGW sets were of redundant HST buffet cars, not former loco-hauled stock.

FGW had hoovered up lots of the ex-CrossCountry HSTs after they had been replaced by Voyagers or after use on Project Rio services between London and Manchester during the WCML modernisation work, with last influx to replace the Class 180s in 2008.

I don't know why you think it should make any difference to fitting power doors - the differences between HST and loco-hauled version are principally the electrical system (renewed anyway in the case of stock converted to HST standards) and the locations of underfloor equipment.

there are one or two ex-loco hauled Mk3's with GWR though.

Not necessarily. The 153s should be replaced by cascading much of which is delayed

42382/383 were converted from from 12128/172 for FGW.

In terms of conversion, what you say is broadly true, though the control end is no 1 end on LHCS and no 2 end on HST stock. No, I don’t understand why either!

With such a short train do they still have both Class 43s in push/pull, or is it more fuel efficient just to turn the trailing one off?

I’m sure one of these was on Platform 1 in Weston-super-Mare this evening around 20:00. It left just after heading towards Bristol once an IET came into Platform 2.

There's a different set working back and forth between Bristol - Taunton. This must be the diagram you seen working at WSM tonight.

From outside the station, going by the shape of the windows on the doors it looked to be a modified set.

Definitely a different set as the Cardiff runs were the ‘classic’ set!

The classic set runs continue this week and are running again tomorrow. They seem to be a very specific set of times - are they running a "ghost" service to what will become the norm in May when more trains start running between Plymouth and Penzance? rather than just random testing of the rolling stock?

I have just noticed, that GW01 is running 2E47 from Plymouth to Exeter St Davids currently. But I thought that was a 150 booked diagram...?

Has anyone know a rough date when we see “Castle” sets on Cardiff - Taunton run in passenger service?
