As you've probably noticed you would get a better reception saying you were a kitten killer than that you had used TheTrainline. However in this case they aren't telling porkies - I tweeted TheTrainline and they confirm that as long as the ticket has been downloaded (which will happen as soon as you purchase it), you can activate it later without a mobile or WiFi signal.Thanks everyone, judging by the advice I think this will be the first and last time I use it.

Can you buy mTickets from TheTrainline without the app?But only if you have their "app" on your phone. Not all phones can download it.
Just watch out though. I bought an m ticket through the TPE app and I assumed that I would be able to print it off as usual and couldn't. It also hadn't uploaded to my phone so I couldn't show the guard. It would have required some web connection. I hope things would have changed by them, this was six months ago.
