Hi All,

I've booked a mobile ticket on the trainline and although the website faqs claim "you can even activate your ticket without mobile signal". Do you require WiFi or data to activate a mobile ticket?

Some help would be much appreciated...

In my experience, yes, that sounds like another barefaced lie from the Trainline.

I may not be an expect in m-tickets but I do deal with them all the time. Time and time again a phone with no signal sits there on whichever app its loaded on with the spinning wheel of death until it gets signal then it loads and activates.

Best bit of help I can offer is don't use them!

Shouldn't need signal, I believe it's all in the app. Not sure though. Don't often buy non-Priv tickets.

I agree with what is being said so far I don't use it for any any of my personal booking based on the fact that they charge you a booking fee and also a credit card fee which for me normally adds up to about £2 but can vary. Use any other company but not the trainline thay is what I recommend.

Thanks everyone, judging by the advice I think this will be the first and last time I use it. Thank you for the advice :D

I would NEVER use Trainline as they charge a booking fee and fee for using a credit card. The TOC's are not allowed to charge a booking fee AND in some cases you will get a cheaper ticket using the specific TOC as they sometimes are only on sale through there website.

As you've probably noticed you would get a better reception saying you were a kitten killer than that you had used TheTrainline. However in this case they aren't telling porkies - I tweeted TheTrainline and they confirm that as long as the ticket has been downloaded (which will happen as soon as you purchase it), you can activate it later without a mobile or WiFi signal.

But only if you have their "app" on your phone. Not all phones can download it.

I am having a similar argument with Booking.com at the moment as there "app" is not applicable to my old Nokia.

Agree with others - DON'T use trainline.

FWIW, I tend to use the TPE website - m-tickets if I want them, collect at station or free postage to home for 'traditional' tickets, and I get Nectar points :)

Just watch out though. I bought an m ticket through the TPE app and I assumed that I would be able to print it off as usual and couldn't. It also hadn't uploaded to my phone so I couldn't show the guard. It would have required some web connection. I hope things would have changed by them, this was six months ago.

Of course if you buy an m ticket you cannot then print a normal ticket. Huge potential for fraud otherwise.
