Morning

With advance tickets I understand that the earlier you book the best deals are avaailable

How far in advance can you book advance tickets ? and which is the best place to get the said tickets

Thanks

It doesn't really matter where you buy them from as long as you use a TOC website as they can't charge you booking fees and most offer free first class postage. Personally I use East Coast as they offer a 10% discount on some East Coast fares and I like the interface they use.

Hi guys

the discount is good on the websites - but generally not counting the discount is it cheaper on the pc or at the station - I have always been to the station and taled face to face or with telesales but I do not think they do that now ??

Cheers

The only website currently offering a "discount" is East Coast, for their own services
I therefore use them when booking East Coast tickets, rather than using Glasgow Central

London Midland are also running a promotion on their own "off-peak" fares
Sadly I booked a return ticket before this promotion commenced, but the saving would not have been much

As for cheaper between a TOC website or the station, I am not aware of any price difference
The main difference comes in delivery method and the associated cost

I prefer to book my own seats (not those allocated by a website) so the vast majority of my bookings are at Glasgow Central

A lot of TOCs offer discounts on their own tickets when bought through their website.

East Coast and National Express East Anglia seem to be offering a permenant 10% discount off select East Coast and National Express East Anglia Advance tickets bought through their own respective websites.

East Midlands Trains are offering a £1 discount off East Midlands Trains Advance tickets purchased through their website.

London Midland are currently offering a half price discount off certain London Midland Off-peak tickets purchased through their website.

Southern are offering a 25% discount on selected Southern Advance and Off-peak Day tickets bought through their website.

CrossCountry offer a 10% discount to any NUS holders purchasing CrossCountry Advance tickets through their website.

TransPennine Express offer up to 50% off select TransPennine Express Advance fares bought by holders of 1625 Railcards through their website.

Also consider looking at Megatrain for certain services operated by Virgin Trains, East Midlands Trains and South West Trains. Mobitix also exists for certain journeys on Virgin Trains, Grand Central, First Great Western, CrossCountry and First Capital Connect. I'm unsure about the level of discount offered by any of them, but the FGW one is very good, with lots of £1 and £3 single tickets between London and Oxford.

Other TOCs may be offering online discounts of which I am not aware.

Do not book tickets through theTrainline, Red Spotted Hanky, Raileasy or MyTrainTicket.co.uk as they all charge at least a booking fee, a credit/debit card fee or a fee for First class postage.

Unofficially, some TOCs will sell until midnight. The "official" deadline is, as you say, 18:00.

I have recently bought Advance tickets for travel the next day at 22:00 (this was for East Coast tickets, using the East Coast website).

I think I've seen this before too.

A point to remember is that if you find a nice and cheap ticket when looking online, it's best to try and get it there and then. If you find it online, then pop down to the station to book it, you may find it either gone or the price has gone up (due to the cheaper Advance tickets running out). Been there, done that before.

If buying at the station, if you've got a railcard, make sure you show it otherwise you may find you end up paying more too. This is due to the clerk having to exit the system and restart the look-up if he/she isn't aware you have a railcard, during which time, as it's a nationwide system, the ticket you want may be sold out, leaving you to pay more for a more expensive ticket. A very good friend of mine, who's also on the forum, has suffered this a few years ago.

On the topic of railcard discounted Advance tickets, you may also find, occasionally, that whilst you can't find an Advance for the journey you want with the discount, there may be some available without. Sounds a bit daft, but this does happen.

As for booking tickets, I usually opt to purchase through either FGW or East Coast. I recall hearing quite some time back that profits from East Coast's booking system went back to the government or something similar, which is a nice little bonus. Sometimes FGW's booking systems can't find any fares at all, so I pop onto East Coast instead and get it through them. Their booking engine allows you to compare different fares much more easily too, which helps when trying to decide whether to leave on the 0730 or 0830 (for example)!

The reservations (Central Reservations System) in booking offices will not allow you to, nor can you override it.

As for the internet, well, any matter of things is possible online.

As well as the booking horizons, for East Coast you can sign up with the website to get an email alert for when specific dates go on sale. Mindyou, with some dates you still want to be stitting at your computer when the email comes in to get the best prices- Christmas travel especially sold out of the cheapest tickets within an hour of the email going out.

If you're booking a journey with SWT, you can book up to 23:59. :D

I have booked on EC at about 2350 the day before travel It meant I travelled with them instead of getting a coach.

You're still best checking on a Thursday before the e-mail arrives. I've usually booked my trains before I get the e-mail (which almost always arrives just after 1100). The prices seem to take several hours to load so some are available a couple of hours before the e-mail arrives. It's always tricky knowing whether to take what you can find or hope cheaper alternative trains will turn up.
