Dear all,
I have started a project documenting old torn posters on the tube system for a photographic project. This has been done mainly at Kings cross although they have now removed all of them as the station upgrade moves ahead. I have noticed on websites like subterranea Britannica and abandoned stations.org that in disused tunnels beneath Euston used as storage and workshops? there are still period posters. Is anyone aware of how I can access these areas. I am a UK resident. Recent CRB and work for the NHS, just to help dispel ideas that i am a terrorist. I do want to use a camera but would obviously have all images vetted in the interests of safety and copyright.

Best regards

Andrew Stanney

LU don't as a rule allow access to any non-public areas now, apart from workers who need to be there. Your best bet, although a slim chance, is to contact LU directly with your request.

Firstly I will point out I think some old posters have been uncovered in a passenger accessable area at Finsbury Park LU station - IIRC on the Southbound, in one of the corridors between the Piccadilly and Victoria lines.

Secondly, Im sorry to say I doubt you'll get anywhere - visits to places such as Aldwych have been severely cut back since 7th July.

All I can say is try contacting LU Customer Services, the London Transport Museum - and maybe a letter to London Underground's Managing Director? Obviously he wouldn't read it but his PA should refer it to the right person, I'd have thought?

Thanks,

I've been in touch with the film office and after some badgering they have accepted my proposal to ask for permission to put forward a proposal. The permission rests it seems on the station manager at Euston. Although strangely they were not aware that Euston has unused passenger tunnels as it quite clearly does having had different entrances changed over the years. Wether there are still posters i have only been able to asses by looking at websites that deal with disused stations. If anyone knows of any old posters on sectioned of areas i would love to know. If anyone can confirm old posters at Euston it would save me a lot of work. I like the idea of contacting the Managing Director, thank you for that suggestion. All i can offer TFL is an up to date CRB, I work with vulnerable adults as a day job and pay for a possible chaperone and all images taken to security vetted.

I know, i looked at that site before phoning the film office. The film office were not aware of those tunnels and they had worked there 20 years. Look under Euston and youll see the areas i mean. Thanks for the suggestion.

There are only 2 at finsbury park now. all the other posters were ripped down 2 weeks ago, the ones at clapham high street were painted over. there are about 3 at tottenham court road on the tunnel from the central to the northern line.

Good luck with your request!

There are quite often old posters on the walls of stations where 'false wall' panelling was installed - examples of this panelling are at Holborn, Embankment and Euston (Northern line CX branch).

Occasionally some panels will be removed for maintenance or modernisation work, and you then might be able to see posters from 20-30 years ago.

ok, thats interesting. These areas must get opened up. i might source film crews who tend to work with bigger budgets how they approach things. Money often seems to be the final sway, after pleading, charm and begging.

just to spread this nationally, if there are any other stations with similar images? above or below ground.

Up only about two weeks ago there was an old poster at Mile End, which was advertising some sort of medicine, above the stairs into the station (the only entrance/exit) it was revealed while the tiles were being cleaned or replaced but now it has been recovered with tiles. It looked at least 50 if not more years old.

I used to work at Euston as a station assistant, shame i'm not still there! Have you had any more luck so far? I believe the particular area you have mentioned (if you go to the tail-end of platform 6 southbound northern line bank branch there is a set of stairs behind a steel grating which leads up to a long corridor with storage rooms ect.) unfortunatly like most people are saying the posters and features are probely gone now as when I worked there they were using this space to house electic/signalling systems for the new victoria line upgrade. best of luck anyways!

Thank you for that. So far I've enquirer with members of subterranea britannica who have said that as of a year ago there were still posters in these spots. There are tunnels leading to two old entrances one at drummond street the other was further down the Euston road I believe. TFL have given mr permission but no confirmation the posters are still there other than security clearance. I have hope that there may be something leading to drummond street. I need really to clarify with the station manager at euston before I go down but I think it's reasonable to assume there will still be examples unless of course all the Walls have been cleared and whitewashed? Anymore clear information would be appreciated. I'm also contacting tube limes for information.

If your ever near euston pop by and ask to see the station supervisor (LU equivilant of station manager). From when I worked there all of these were very knowlogable of the history of the station and as they need to know and conduct searches of the whole station you may beable to ask them and get a informative answer straight away. As for posters still being there, knowing PPE, whitewashing would cost money so prob hasn't been done! :)
