All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –July 1957

Sixty years ago Standard class steam locomotives were still in production with fourteen locomotives delivered in the month. Diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate with seventeen locomotives delivered in the month and the pilot series diesels had commenced delivery. There was also an increasing flow of new diesel multiple units.

New Locomotives
Standard Class 3MT 2-6-0 – 76093, 76104/05/06
Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 – 92136/37/38/39/40/42
Class D2/10 – 11708 (D2708)
Class 08 – D3360/61/67/68/69, D3463/64/65/66
Class 20 - D8001/02
New Diesel Multiple Units
Swindon Inter City –
Gloucester RCW (Class 100) – Sc50343/44/45/46, Sc56098/99, Sc56100/01
Metro Cammell (Class 101) – E50215/16/17/18/19/20/26/27/28/29, E56067/68/69/70/71/72/78/79/80/81
Metro Cammell (Class 102) – E50252/53/62/63
BRCW (Class 104) – M50434/35/36/37/38/39/40/86/87/88/89/90/91/92, M59142/43/44/45/4647/48
Cravens (Class 105) – E50388/89/90/91/92, E56143/44/45/46/47

In the month fifty six steam locomotives were withdrawn, twenty six being over fifty years old with Midland Railway 1142 Class 0-6-0 58114 being the oldest, having been built by Kitsons, entering traffic in February 1875 and condemned eighty two years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older main line secondary and branch line passenger engines and old freight engines who were at the bottom of the cascade of power from the continued delivery of the Standards and Diesel Multiple Units. Fifteen locomotives condemned were built post the 1923 grouping, however only four could be considered as a post grouping design.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

All Our Yesterdays – 55 Years Ago –July 1962

Diesel and Electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington building class 08’s, Horwich building class 08’s, Doncaster building class 85 electric locomotives, Derby building class 46 “Peaks”, Crewe building class 52 Westerns, Eastleigh building class 73 elecro diesels and Swindon building class 52’s Westerns. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 37’s and class 40’s. Also English Electric were building at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 20’s and class 37’s, Beyer Peacock at Manchester were building class 35 Hymek’s, Brush were building class 30’s (31’s) at Loughborough, North British Locomotive Co. at Glasgow class 22’s, the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. were building class 27 and Ruston were building class 07’s..

New locomotives:
Class 07 – D2990/91
Class 08 – D4138/39/87/88/89
Class 20 – D8127
Class 22 – D6352/53
Class 27 – D5398/99, D5400/01/02/03/04/05
Class 30 – D5848/49/50/52
Class 35 – D7040/41/42/43
Class 37 – D6745/46/47/69
Class 40 – D396/97
Class 46 – D171/72/73/74
Class 52 – D1006 Western Stalwart, D1035 Western Yeoman
Class 73 – E6004
Class 85 – E3070

Locomotives Named: D227 Parthia

In the month steam locomotive withdrawals declined slightly from one hundred and eighty two in June 1962 to one hundred and seventy two. The steady delivery of main line diesels and the decline of the Pre Grouping classes would see an increase in the number of the Post Grouping designed locomotives condemned. For example this month would see eleven London Midland and Scottish Railway, Stanier 2 cylinder 2-6-2 tanks condemned. However it was the Great Western Railway fleet that was really starting to pressure with twenty 4-6-0 engines (including another three Kings) and twenty nine 0-6-0 pannier tanks (three of which were less than ten years old) condemned At least one engine escaped being broken up, Great Western Railway
Class 45xx 2-6-2T 4588.

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – July 1967

For the second consecutive month no new locomotives entered traffic. With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete, with only a couple of Class 47’s from the Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough, the last ten or so Class 20’s from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry and the on order, fifty Class 50 locomotives still to be delivered lean times were approaching for the UK locomotive manufacturing industry.

The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

D5537, D5648/68, D5800/09/18

Steam withdrawals in the month increased from one hundred and thirty seven to one hundred and sixty two. This month saw the end of steam on the Southern Region with withdrawal of the remaining steam fleet. With only fourteen months to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In June sixteen Black Fives, seventeen 8F’s and and no less than sixty one BR Standards were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet started to pick up with twenty one locomotives condemned.

40033 worked the 10:38 Leeds – Paignton on the 21st July after the booked Peak failed at Derby. It was taken off at Bristol and returned with the 16:07 Bristol – Newcastle.

There appeared to be a shortage of Type 4 power in the Midlands on the 30th July 1977 when 25187+25269 provided the power for the 09:47, Nottingham – Paignton and 25264+25210 for the 12:20, Birmingham – Newquay.
