All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – February 1967

Locomotive building was being undertaken as follows, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry were delivering the final batch of Class 20’s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough and British Rail Crewe Works were delivering Class 47’s and British Rail, Derby Works were delivering Class 25’s

New locomotives:
Class 20 – D8185/91/92/93/94/95/96/97
Class 25 – D7671/72
Class 47 – D1111, D1958/59

Doncaster Works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

D5523/48, D5612/60/98, D5806/29

Main line diesel and electric production in the month remained steady at thirteen. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased significantly from ninety four to fifty six. With less than two years to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals, with in February eleven Black Fives, eleven 8F’s and thirteen BR Standards being condemned. This month would see the slaughter commence in earnest of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet with thirty two locomotives withdrawn. British Rail had finally decided to react to the effects of the Beeching cuts to the network and the move towards “block” freight trains on its shunting engine requirements.

On the 16th February 1977 whilst working 1S16, 08:00 King's Cross - Edinburgh 55008 was in collision at Darlington with a Diesel Multiple Unit, the cause being defective train brakes on 1S16.

On the 26th February 1977 four Football specials arrived at Middlesbrough from Kings Cross hauled by 47458 (1G40), 40145 (1G41), 31183+31214 (1G43) and 47520 (1G44).

That's because the majority of people on here are far too young to have any interest in trains from years ago.
I'm of the opposite view as I find modern traction has little variety and is quite boring and I have little interest in it.

I also struggle to find interest in the railway scene today. I grew up in the era of the Westerns and green diesels and wasn't interested in steam, I only saw the odd one in service, it's a generational thing. These days I'm very interested in the steam era - perhaps one mellows as one gets older?

It makes me feel old to think that the first 56s entered traffic and last westerns were withdrawn 40 years ago.

Three of the class 08s withdrawn that month were converted to snowploughs.

All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –March 1957

Sixty years ago Standard class steam locomotives were still in production with sixteen locomotives delivered in the month. Diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate with six locomotives delivered in the month. There was also an increasing flow of new diesel multiple units.

New Locomotives
Standard Class 5 4-6-0 – 73148/49/66
Standard Class 4 4-6-0 – 75056/57
Standard Class 4 2-6-0 – 76082/83
Standard Class 4 2-6-4T – 80154
Standard Class 2 2-6-2T – 84020/21/22
Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 – 92095, 92123/24/25/26
Class D2/5 – 11186 (D2409)
Class 05 – 11165 (D2562)
Class 08 – 13337/38/39/40 (D3337/38/39/40)
New Diesel Multiple Units
Swindon Inter City – Sc79161/62/63/64, ]Sc79443/44
Metro Cammell (Class 101) – E50186/87/88/89/90/91/92/93, E59067/68/69/70/80/81/82/83
Cravens (Class 105) – E50374/75/76/77, E56129/30/31/32
BR Derby (Class 114) – E50035/41/42/43/44/45/46, E56035/41/42/43/44/45/46

In the month fifty two steam locomotives were withdrawn, twenty nine being over fifty years old with Midland Railway 1142 Class 0-6-0 58156 being the oldest, having been built by Beyer Peacock, entering traffic in April 1876 and condemned seventy nine years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older main line secondary passenger engines and freight engines who were at the bottom of the cascade of power from the continued delivery of the Standards and Diesel Multiple Units. Only four locomotives condemned were Post Grouping designs, namely two from the unremarkable London Midland and Scottish Railway 7F, 0-8-0 class, a London Midland and Scottish Railway 2-6-0-0-6-2T Garret (being replaced by the far more modern a versatile Standard 9F) and a London and North Eastern Railway class V4, 2-6-2 which was one of a class of only two locomotives and therefore “non standard”
