All Our Yesterdays 50 Years Ago February 1967
Locomotive building was being undertaken as follows, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry were delivering the final batch of Class 20s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough and British Rail Crewe Works were delivering Class 47s and British Rail, Derby Works were delivering Class 25s
New locomotives:
Class 20 D8185/91/92/93/94/95/96/97
Class 25 D7671/72
Class 47 D1111, D1958/59
Doncaster Works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;
D5523/48, D5612/60/98, D5806/29
Main line diesel and electric production in the month remained steady at thirteen. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased significantly from ninety four to fifty six. With less than two years to go steady inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8Fs and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals, with in February eleven Black Fives, eleven 8Fs and thirteen BR Standards being condemned. This month would see the slaughter commence in earnest of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet with thirty two locomotives withdrawn. British Rail had finally decided to react to the effects of the Beeching cuts to the network and the move towards block freight trains on its shunting engine requirements.
