I expect this to be quite tricky, can't be [/i]that many possibilities.

Nice, easy one to start:

New Mills Ctrl to New Mills Newtown - 15 minute walk. 1hr 24 by train.

Whaley Bridge to Chinley - 30-35 minutes by foot. 35-37 minutes by train (during leaffall longer).

Liskeard - Coombe Jn. Halt? A fairly brisk downhill walk vs. the large 270-degree turn taken by the train.

The winner, though, is surely Mallaig-Kyle of Lochalsh. A 27-mile walk that's still quicker than the quickest train-only trip.

Again a walk between the two Yeovil Stations (which unless you could cut across some fields) would be a treturous walk along a busy road!

Upper Tyndrum to Lower Tyndrum

Penrhyndeudraeth/Minffordd etc to Blaenau Ffestiniog (if one is talking about main line services - or if it's out of season for the FR)

Hartford to Greenbank. They're both in Hartford and only a few minutes apart on foot, but to go via train would involve changing at Crewe and either Chester or Stockport.

Also, are you including tube journeys? I imagine there'll be some right crackers getting from one London terminal to another using only national rail services. For example, it looks like Kings Cross to St. Pancras by rail services only would involve changing at Finsbury Park, Highbury & Islington and West Hampstead. And if you ruled out London Overground, you're looking at going all the way out to Peterborough and Leicester

There are plenty in South London due to the Victorian Railway building mania. Some are Beckenham Junction-New Beckenham on a weekend (when the parliamentary type weekday service does not run) By foot 10-15 mins, by train over an hour. On the same lines Kent House -Clock House 5 mins walk & over an hour by train. Penge East & West 10 min walk and well over an hour by train. Coulsdon South- Coulsdon Town 3 min walk for 25 mins by train. New Cross-New Cross gate 3 min walk 30 mins by train. Catford-Catford bridge 1 min walk or about an hour by train. Sure there are plenty more!

It's 1.1 miles by foot so unless you're an athlete a few minutes is very fast! The 82 bus service is timetables to take 4 minutes between the Greenbank Hotel and Hartford station.* The quickest journey option I can see for rail between the two stations is 1 hr 27.

In the Hartford to Greenbank direction journey planners suggest:
Hartford to Liverpool South Parkway
Liverpool South Parkway to Warrington Central
Walk to Warrington Bank Quay !!!!!!!!
Warrington Bank Quay to Chester
Chester to Greenbank

It's also £13.40 single by train.

* I'd like to see the 15:46 bus do it in four minutes knowing what the school traffic is like around that area.

Another couple -

Gatley to Cheadle Hulme -2.5 miles walking or 56 minutes on the train.

Styal to Handforth - 1.2 miles walking or at least 30 minutes by train (plus a long wait for a train!)

Birmingham New Street to Snow Hill and Moor Street.

Since have to swap at Smethwick Galton bridge.

As the latter to Moor street, go out the station and walk under the Bull Ring.

Edit: Even though to a extreme no one would do that journey (at least wouldn't think so)

No need to rule out tube for this journey as it cannot be done by tube without starting at Kings Cross St Pancras and ending at Kings Cross St Pancras.

This is surely a valid one- there's no Underground service between the two afterall as they share an underground station!

This must actually be pretty common. There are lots of places where two lines cross with nearby stations but no connection.

In the South East...

Edenbridge and Edenbridge Town. 15 minute walk. Over and hour via East Croydon.

Dorking and Dorking (Deepdene). 5 minute walk. Nearly two hours via Clapham Junction and Redhill.

Maidstone Barracks and Maidstone East. 10 minute walk. Two hours via Paddock Wood and Ashford.

Canterbury West and Canterbury East. 15 minute walk. Change at Dover and Ashford takes well over an hour.

Farnborough North and Farnborough (Main). 15 minute walk but would require two changes by rail. Actually a few examples in that area where several lines pass over and near each other without making connections.

Southend Central and Victoria. 10 minute walk. Maybe a couple of hours via train.

There could be literally hundreds in London itself.

Still quicker on foot, but what about:
Silver Street Dep 0901, Cheshunt Arr 0917
Cheshunt Dep 0943, Angel Road Arr 0952
51 mins with one change.

Thanks to the one-directional operation of the Wirral line loop, Liverpool Central-Liverpool Lime Street would be another- train requires a change at Moorfields or James Street- the distance walked to change at Moorfields is probably not much shorter than just walking the whole way!

The Jubilee Line between Southwark (Waterloo East) and Waterloo Underground stations would stop that from being so if we count the Underground stations as part of the main stations.

Ah, so it would. I wasn't considering LU.

Well done that man! :D

Barton on Humber to Hessle.

A 5 mile trot across the Humber Bridge or a 3 hour train journey via Habrough and Donny!

Burnley Manchester Road to Burnley Barracks/Burnley Central/Rose Grove.

All would involve a journey doubling back at Accrington.
