Any chance of jotting down the permitted routes from Leuchars to Glasgow. I'm away from my desk (& hard copy of the routing guide).

Given that there is no regular scheduled service from Inverkeithing to Falkirk avoiding Edinburgh, the shortest route should be 92 miles: Leuchars - Ladybank - Perth - Gleneagles - Stirling - Glasgow QS.

Note that if travel is via Edinburgh, then doubling-back (within Edinburgh Group) to Waverley is permitted, due to the Group Stations rule.

If your origin/destination only has one train per day, then that's unfortunate. But the existence of a one train per day (or week) service on a more direct route, for a flow where there are many more services via alternative route, should not have a negative impact on customers.

In this case, there are mapped routes (one of which, via Carlisle, is quite convoluted), but in some cases there are no mapped routes, and travel is only via the shortest route (or direct trains) and if you said someone had to use one train per day despite their being a regular service by a longer route, that would be insane. It would be absolutely totally ludicrous to deny passengers via the shortest route with a regular scheduled passenger service (ie, via Perth) while allowing them via Carlisle and Kilmarnock!

I think that in this instance it is safe to ignore the direct route which runs from Dalmeny to Linlithgow via Kirkliston. The National Routeing Guide Instructions tell us that "the shortest route is calculated by reference to the National Rail Timetable". In that timetable, none of the tables listed in the Index for Dalmeny (242) or for Linlithgow (228 and 230) show a distance for Dalmeny to Linlithgow via Kirkliston.

The shortest Leuchars - Glasgow distance which can be "calculated by reference to the National Rail Timetable" is:

Leuchars to Glasgow Queen Street - Shortest Route: 92 miles
