What constitutes 'Line side Equipment' when TOC's often quote it as a reason for delays/canx to services?

You often hear of Signal Failures, but surely the signals are line side equipment too?

Any explanation welcome! I'm only a humble commuter! ;)

I suppose points failures, axle counter failure, anything to do with signalling?

It is usually cable theft however it can be a number of things and generally it is signalling, axle counter failure, electrical failure etc.

Level crossings, those rail lubricator things that occasionally dump their load on the track by accident. Point heaters going wrong. CRS doing down the pan? OHLE?
