If you have been following this thread, you will know that I pushed into some of the more 'progressive' areas of rail photography at times. Based on this batch, Scotish trips in particular seem to have got my creative juices flowing.

22/10/86. Front seat on a Class 101 allows for a drivers eye view entering into Waverley.

Another stunning composition, really draws the eye. And it takes me back to those days, of looking out of the front of DMUs - best seat in the house!

I'm no expert on the ScR's stations - but is that arriving into Glasgow Queen Street? I can't picture a tunnel immediately either end of Edinburgh Waverley.
Or - is it taken where the line burrows under (I think) Scottish National Gallery building and road, to the immediate west of Waverley Station?

05/07/86. I do appear to have shot nearly a whole roll of film on 26034 at Queen Street. Glass fibre of the cab roof is clearly visible.

There are tunnels at both ends of Waverley station. And yes you are quite correct, that is the tunnel under the Scottish National Gallery (at the west end of the station), on the run into the platforms from Princes Street Gardens.

Wonderful images as always lostwin, it's been lovely having a fresh batch to scroll gently through.

Seconded. Every one's a joy. 8-)
Thanks @sprinterguy - my memory of my 1990 Scottish Rail Rover isn't as clear as it once was :D

Ah well, I couldn’t work out where to post this, so I’ll use my own thread.

Folkestone Harbour station, has been sympathetically restored over the past few years and now forms part of the successful Harbour Arm development. It hosts regular events and Sunday markets utilising the platforms and the signal box has a cosy cafe. Tonight it hosted the first of the Living Advert Calendar events and as you can see , was very well attended.

This station has tremendous history, not least the role it played in the First World War where around 10 million soldiers passed through along with thousands of refugees. It could easily have been demolished since the last train services ran, so it’s a real credit to the town on the transformation achieved.

Crumbs, what a super transformation. I well recall the state of decay, when I watched the final two specials up the grade: 34067 Tangmere (January 2009) and 70013 Oliver Cromwell (March 2009).
The actual pier track, I was fortunate to ride December 1991; thanks to the Southern Electric Group's marvellous "Emerald Water Witch" tour using green 4EPB 5001.

This is not a great shot, but one of only a couple I have of the Harbour branch and station in use, would have been 1985.

I saw that view a few times as a kid. My grandparents retired to Folkestone and we went past where the pic was taken to go to west cliff sand, to buy fish etc. The railway crossed the road on a very low bridge. Grandad used to take us on the pier to see the ships. The trains were so long the front 1-2 carriages were off the juice rail and on the quayside. Not ro-ro then. Ships were Cote d'azure and Maid of Orleans.

My first ever channel crossing was Maid of Orleans on a school trip, disembarking next to a loco-hauled train at Boulogne Maritime. S.S. St Patrick on the way home.

Great to see the Folkestone pictures have sparked some memories and as a resident of the town now, always fascinating to learn of more of the history.

I'll go for a fairly tenuous link for the next group of photos, in each case a loco hauling a single carriage.

12/03/85. 31432 emerges from the tunnel at the Southern end of Leicester Station hauling an observation car bound for Derby.

Up the creek
#825 and 826. Normally these were described as Inspection Saloons, although later some of them were used as Observation Saloons.

Ah, the other end of post #12's shot. :)
It surprises me how "different" those two images feel.
Ha, yes - we have been on same train / alternative viewpoint rations on some of these for a while now. We should probably be thankful that I didn't have a motor drive fitted to the camera!

Busy week, but a bit of time to chill now and add another batch from the dwindling pile. I'll pick up what I have left from the Highlands.

13/07/86. The driver of 37415 stretches his legs ahead of taking charge of the 14.00 Kyle - Inverness.

23/10/86. 37421 would have been given a drink before setting it's sights North with the 17.35 Inverness - Wick / Thurso.

10/07/86. 3 months earlier, the same loco was also found plying its trade on Britains most Northerly rail route. Heading South, this time at Georgemas Junction with the portion of the train originating at Wick (18.00 to Inverness).

Now how is this for a co-incidence. It's my Birthday today and a completely unexpected present only received an hour ago came in the form of some photos a friend of mine took in 1986 - I have never seen these before. He wasn't into trains but we did spend a week travelling in Scotland that July. So following very neatly on from the last photo, this is from the platform at Garve of 37414 which is awaiting the arrival of 37417 (post above) to clear the single track ahead. That's me on the left, camera poised. Spooky!!
