Hi all,

I've been lurking on this thread for about a month now, trying to prepare myself as much as possible for the assessments. I've found a lot of the information greatly helpful and I feel as though me passing the AC1 assessment last week was much to credit of everyone who has commented. I'm currently preparing my notes and practicing my answers for the AC2 assessment I've got coming up later on this week, and I was just wondering if anyone could give me a very basic example of what a "Results Based Competency" would look/sound like. I would also greatly appreciate any other pieces on info that anyone thinks may be important to know/consider before going in for the AC2.
Again this forum has been very useful for me, and I'm sure many other budding TFL Train Operators. So I'd like to thank everyone who has been helping out, and the same to everyone who has been reporting back after all the stages. Also no hard feelings if nobody wants help, competition and all that.
Thanks.
Hello n1x0n94,
For the results Focus, I would suggest thinking about an example where you have encountered a challenging task that you have overcome, and how you ensured that you delivered what was required, despite any difficulties faced.
Good Luck!

Thank you again peanloma, I had my AC2 Monday morning, feeling fairly happy with how it went, time to be patient and wait for the outcome either way.

Has anyone else had results recently?

Morning everyone,

Firstly can i say this thread is brilliant and i love the way everyone is so helpful.

I have my AC1 tomorrow but even if i pass i have concerns about the medical. I went to my optician just for a routine check up and i mentioned i had applied to become a P/T Tube driver. The Optician said 'i hope you are not colour blined'. So i asked if we could do a test. We did the Ishihara card test and it turns out i have red-green colour blindness.

So, what i need to know is do they do the same test at the medical and if it shows that i have red-green colour blindness will i be taken off the process?

If it is the case that i cant be a Tube driver due to the colour blindness i will just drop out of the process and save a days leave plus give someone else a chance to take my place.

Hi and welcome to the forum! This is what I found online by TFL (see link at bottom).

" FOR most jobs colour perception is not a key requirement, but for some it can be a matter of life and death. Correct interpretation of railway signals, electrical wiring and air traffic landing lights are safety- critical tasks where good colour perception is essential. But conventional colour vision screening is a somewhat blunt instrument to determine who is and is not fit to carry out such critical work. Until now it has discriminated unfairly against people with a colour vision deficiency but whose vision is not in fact so poor as to create a risk to safety. Thanks to technology developed by the Applied Vision Research Centre at City University London, fit-for-work decisions can now be reliable and fair. I visited Transport for London (TfL), where the technology has been introduced to screen the vision of its 3,500 train drivers.

" Conventional colour assessment tests, such as Ishihara plates, have high sensitivity, but fail to quantify accurately the severity of colour vision loss and cannot be used to determine exactly who does, and does not, have the required level of colour vision for safety-critical work. New technology, originally developed for air traffic safety, has now been introduced by Transport for London to assess its underground train drivers. John Ballard reports. "

Interestingly, it says the Ishihara plates test is not accurate and is unfair against people with a colour vision deficiency but whose vision is not in fact so poor as to create a risk to safety.
So you may still be able to do it.

I am wondering if it is even worth me going. I mean if i fail the Ishihara test but then they do a mpre accurate one then thats fine. But, otherwise its a waste of time. I called TFL but they could not help.

I had my medical in June and the Ishihara plates are still used as part of the vision test. A whole booklet of them, in fact.

Digging a bit deeper, the S1604 document (Vision standard for personnel requiring safety on the track certification) details exactly what is required by TfL:

3.1.2
The visual acuity scale used in this standard is for a traditional Snellen chart. Where
a logMAR chart is used for vision assessment the reading shall be converted to
Snellen using the scale contained in the current British Standard.
3.2
Vision Standards
3.2.1
General
3.2.1.1 Personnel requiring safety on the track certification must not suffer from any eye
pathology which may affect their own safety, or that of others, when on or about the
track. This includes conditions or treatment which may cause sudden impairment/loss
of vision or visual fields.
3.2.1.2 Use of spectacles (including bifocals and varifocals) and contact lenses is permitted to achieve the corrected vision standard.
3.2.2
Track Competent, Protection Master, and Track Access Qualified (LU only)
3.2.2.1 Uncorrected vision must be 3/60 or better, in both eyes.
3.2.2.2 Corrected vision must be at least 6/9 in one eye and 6/12 in the other, or better.
3.2.2.3 Full visual fields are required in both eyes.
3.2.2.4 Normal colour vision is required. However for LU employees only, the LU Category 5 Standard (S5606 – Colour Vision Standard) may apply.
3.2.2.5 Contact lenses are permitted unless not allowed for occupational reasons, as
identified in the risk assessment.
Reference: S1604 A3

There appears to be dispensation for LU to use an alternative colour vision standard, S5606. I can't find this standard online - can anyone with Intranet access confirm exactly what this is?

Just had a call from TFL making a conditional offer depending on medical and background checks, but no start date yet.

That was a very long two weeks waiting for the result, but worth it for the good news. I've no doubt how difficult the training will be, but looking forward to it - and a whole new adventure!

Still keeping the beers in the fridge until I get through the medical though (as I'm no spring chicken!)

Good luck to anyone else still waiting for their AC2 results.

It has to be read in conjunction with S1604 (as quoted by yourself), but basically it allows for the dispensation involving the alternative tests mentioned previously for people who fail the Ishihara test but can still meet the thresholds for specific colour differentiation within LU.

It is worth pointing out that it makes specific reference to the risks of differentiating colours between incandescent signals, and (my words and inference) that more modern signal upgrades may not pose as big a risk.

Congratulations Peanloma, I also received the call today with the conditional offer, likewise I am awaiting everything to go through and I have a start date before having a celebratory beverage. Hopefully I will see you during the next stages or on the same training group.

All the best

That's great news too - let me know when you have a training date (assuming we both make it pass these last checks)

Likewise, I returned the completed forms they sent yesterday, just waiting for the criminal records and referencing e-mail to come.

I've done the same - and was wondering why I hadn't received the background checks e-mail yet. Let me know when you get yours - I'll do likewise

Hi. Anyone who's already done the training can tell me what the salary is during full time training? Thanks!

Just been informed that I'm unlikely to get a training slot until the new year now - so if you are in the same boat as me, there's quite a wait ahead :(

That sucks have you done your medical etc.?

No, they have told me that it's not worth doing the medical yet as it is only valid for 6 months (and so there's a chance I'd have to do it again). It would be nice to have got it out of the way (as it feels like the last hurdle before I can feel really sure that I've got the job) then I could relax a bit, now I'm going to be nervous for ages!

I think I would have given up by now if I hadn't really wanted this role (perhaps that's the point?)

I wonder if I could ask to be a CSA or similar while I'm waiting? (unlikely I know, but he who dares Rodney...);)

I received the backchek e-mail yesterday at around 13:40. Not too much to fill in but you will need driving license and passport details (if you hold them).

Hope you guys hear back soon.

My experience was that they responded after 10 working days as promised (which seems a lot longer when you really want to get some good news!).

Fingers crossed :)

Hey all,

Firstly, my apologies for stalking for so long without posting. I completed my AC2 about three weeks ago and was told I was successful last Thursday. I received my background check e-mail today.

Congratulations to everyone else who has either started or, like me, is waiting for a start date. I hope to put faces to names sometime soon :)
