hi,

Someone asked me something I didn't really know about tickets for the LUL, thought this was a good place to start.

They need to get from Euston-Vuaxhall (Vic S/B) on the Friday they arrive, thence to Vauxhall-Piccadilly Circus (Vic N/B, change at Green Park, Pic E/B) on the saturday, and returning on the saturday. On Sunday, they need to do Vauxhall-Euston (Vic N/B), I was just wondering if there was an easier way of doing it than:

Single Euston-Vauxhall;
Return Vauxhall-Picc Circus;
Single Vauxhall-Euston.

I do not know whether there is an easier way to do it with travelcards etc, or Zones 1-2 only tickets etc, any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

I guess Oyster singles will be your best bet. Only doing one journey Friday and one journey Sunday makes travelcard pretty useless.

Vauxhall - Piccadilly you can take the 88 bus for a cheaper fare if no railcard is held. There are no direct buses between Euston and Vauxhall although the 88 at Great Portland Street is not far off.

Thanks, I think they'd rather jump the Tube, than get on a bus (shudders) and change etc, thanks for the advice NTL.

How does does an Oyster Single cost?

Thanks,
Matt

I might be wrong but I'm not sure TfL sell return tickets anymore. By far the cheapest way is to get an Oyster card and use that. If travel in one day exceeds the value of an appropriate travelcard for the zones used then that is all that will be charged, but if it doesn't end up using a travelcard you won't be charged more than the oyster single fares.

If this is just a visit to London then the Oyster can be bought with a £5 deposit on the first day and the deposit will be refunded when it is surrendered at the end of the last day. This assumes that you start and finish at a tube station, which you seem to be suggesting is the case.

The other thing to note is that on weekends (Saturdays and, especially, Sundays) these days there are often extensive engineering works on numerous tube lines - so you will need to check which bits of the tube are actually open on the dates concerned.

If you go here http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/realtime/tube/default.html you can select "future dates", or this PDF http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/livetravelnews/realtime/tube/track-closures.pdf lists all planned closures for the next six months.

I'd definitely recommend getting an Oyster Card. (You have to pay a £5 deposit, but you can get that refunded if you hand it in again when you've finished with it)

I do not recommend buying LUL tickets, as I said in a post a few days ago they are extremely expensive. A Travelcard or using Pay As You Go (PAYG) (whichever is appropriate) will be cheaper in (probably) all cases.

It can help if you can say where their original journey is from, it sounds like they may be coming from the North West. Unless they have an LM Only ticket, or certain Advance tickets, it is possible that it is cheaper for them to get an inclusive ticket. For example, someone using an SVR from Preston to Vauxhall via LU, is far better off with a Kenny O ticket. It's not always cheaper to split!

Paper Single/Return fares for LUL (flat rate) are still sold on LU, and are the same price whether peak or off peak.

However LUL also sell "SDR", "CDR", and "FDR" tickets, (at least that's what they're called on the fare tables), to NR destinations throughout the South East.

London buses really aren't that bad - and they announce what the next stop is so can be useful even if you don't know the area well. You see a bit more of London too.

Don't get the 88. It takes about an hour to get from Westminster to Great Portland Street.

Sorry, missed this last night. Zone 1 tube fares at all times are £4 cash, £1.90 Oyster. Buses are £2.20 cash, £1.30 Oyster. If you use 4 buses in one day then the Oyster bus cap kicks in at £4. The off-peak travelcard cap for zones 1-2 is £6.60, so 4 tube journeys in one day would activate that.

Hope that helps.
