The Sky Christmas ad features 4468 Mallard in action. Nice bit of CGI.

Isn't it Bittern in disguise. Haven't got Sky so I won't see it but I know the filming happened

It's being shown on the terrestrial channels; I've seen it a few times in the past two - three weeks.

You can see the 4464 number on the cabside.
As for getting the real 4468 back in steam, someone would have to give the NRM two cheques
a) one to strip down the engine and examine the boiler and firebox. From memory the condition of the firebox limited the number of steaming days that it had during the 1980's.
b) an even bigger cheque for the rebuild, fitting of protection systems and paperwork !

who knows, if it comes to fruition, then i may be persuaded to chip in the odd tenner or two !

I was at the NRM 2 months ago, and there was a notice somewhere there that said there were no plans to make Mallard railworthy, preferring to keep it on permanent display in York.

Which is a great pity, I would love to have seen Mallard running next year for the 75th anniversary of her record. Let's hope that she remains in a good state for the centenary in 2038. It's also unfortunate that it's the firebox. AIUI, that was the same area where Flying Scotsman's A4 boiler had problems, so they would have been unable to cannibalise that to repair Mallard, as I hoped they might at some point.

Still, only 26 years to go...

Bittern in disguise or not, the cabside number is 4468 and the nameplate Mallard.

Oddly on the version I watched there was no nameplate visible, but the cabside was definitely 4464 (at 0:22) and 4464 is more clearly shown on the shot inside the cab of the man with the big moustache at 0:24. There again it is a magic train, powered by marshmallows and driven by a yeti, which can deliver films straight to your home whether or not you live by a railway line, so maybe the loco has the ability to be whatever name and number of A4 you wish it to be.

I'd not seen the ad before but its excellent, its started to make me feel all Christmassy.

Indeed, having seen the advert several times already on the tele it was immediately apparent from only a cursory glance that it was 4464 "Bittern" that was used, and a closer study of the version of the advert linked by the OP confirms this in every shot where the number is visible.

Which has been completely unnecessary in November when the advert has been shown.

Please, show me one screenshot where this is the case. I will assess my, admittedly limited, selection of hats for the one I would most prefer to eat if so. :)

It's Bittern. It was filmed on the Mid Hants Railway.

Thank you for adding the link to the advert. Bit daft but fun.

It set me wondering (in the mad way I do when I can't sleep) on the relative costs of running on marshmallows v coal. ;)

That's a good point: The ghost of Christmas yet-to-come will no doubt be visiting me soon enough to show me an empty chair in the corner where Tiny Tim once sat, in order to coax me out of my uncharitable and miserly views towards his thread. :)

I think that marshmallows would gum up the ashpan something awful. ;) However, I believe that some serious research should be lavished on the matter in order to determine whether marshmallow-firing may be a more cost effective alternative to IEP. Petty much everything else has already been suggested. ;)

Aha! I have just seen one of the large billboard adverts for the same thing and the blue A4 featured on there IS named as "Mallard". :D Still not the telly advert though.

Try the Swanley New Barnes Railway http://www.snbr.20m.com/ of the 7 and a quarter inch variety. The news section says their Mallard took part in the Sky advert, and there is a picture of the engine and shiny blue coach on the front page of the web site.

Having noted this thread, I thought I would post an image of 4468 "Mallard's" last mainline journey taken Aug 1988 to celebrate her 50th Anniversary of her record breaking run.

What kind of material condition is Mallard in these days? Would it take a lot of money/work to get her working again (a Flying Scotsman like rebuild for instance) or is she in reasonable condition?

Boiler and firebox I understand however, as far as I aware the Museum don't wish to steam her again given the historical nature and by steaming her again, you will lose some of the originality of the locomotive from it's BR days. Personally, I think she should remain were she is as there are (and have been) other working A4's on the mainline.

I believe it is the intention to steam her in 2036. They do seem to plan that far ahead. The discussion i had with someone seemed to say when scotsman comes out itll be duchess, then mallard from that.

The vid showing '4468' and 'Mallard' was the top banner advert on my online Radio Times when I started this thread. I didn't realise until later that the telly version was different. The makers of this ad evidently changed the numbers at some point. I wonder if it was to see who noticed? Perhaps we're all suffering from OTD (Obsessive Train Disorder).

Relax, Sprinterguy and put your hats back in the cupboard, you'll not be Feasting on your Fedora today.

And thankyou, Johnnychips, for the Dickens reference, I've been known to use it myself around the festive season, although not many people 'get' it.

I've just checked, the Mallard version is still atop the 'Films' webpage of Radio Times.

I believe I heard that run, but couldn't see it, owing to being four years old and not tall enough to see over the wall in Bell Busk.
