I think I worded my question wrong, I was wondering if it will be all 777s or will there still be some old ones in service, they've been running up there for testing/training for a while.
Ah, I see what you mean. I think there's enough trains at Kirkdale now that a full service could be run including a spare? (Plus a 507/508 could be chucked on in case of multiple failures)

I'll probably put my local concession to good use next week now, (being an old git does have its avantages). :D

I don't expect any 507/8s to be disposed of just yet. The 'vacancies' made shortly by 777 operation on the Kirkby line can strengthen other lines with the recent unit shortages on six car diagrams.

I wonder how long it is before they start appearing on the Ormskirk line before the Grand National?

Ormskirk line will rely on Central signal and reverse siding changes to fit the 8-car services, I believe. The work was scheduled in December but cancelled due to strike action, so this'd have to be scheduled, completed, as well as enough trains delivered to run the service (6 trains, I believe, plus any possible 8-car services?).

Some will have to go just to clear enough space in Kirkdale to receive the next batch. But yes, anything spare can be reused to strengthen existing services. Lots of events coming up over the next few months where having a temporary boost in capacity will be beneficial.

I had a discussion up thread I think (might be another thread), but I'm too lazy to find it sorry, about the Central works. Apparently the plan is only for 4 car trains on the Kirkby and Ormskirk lines, and 8 car working is for Southport only. That's why the plans can be delayed and yet the Kirkby services are still going ahead.

It'll be chaos come national if true, but this is Liverpool City Council we are talking about, so it's sadly not a surprise.

You’re assuming NR won’t get the works done before April. Or that they can’t do turnbacks elsewhere.

The plan is for peak time 8 cars on the Ormskirk line aswell (in addition capability for 8cars on other lines during special events). However issues with units working together hasn't quite been resolved.
The national and open golf this year will almost certainly be operated by 507/8 stock.

As for drivers barely any have been trained on the 777s.
Any passenger service on the Kirkby line next week will be little more than a token unit until more drivers are trained up.

Well things are at last looking up on Merseyrail. I personally shall miss the 507/508 when they disappear but I suppose that is progress.

You are wrong. Merseyrail is under the control of the Liverpool City Region which is six local councils of which Liverpool is only one. It has a Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram whose budget is a rates precept.

It's a shame they won't be used for the National or the Open. The 507s and 508s are looking increasingly scruffy

It'll only be one or two units for the time being until more drivers have been trained, I'm pretty sure they'll do driver training this week following the yes vote.

Maybe 1 in service, 1 in the slot for training and the 507/508 for the rest ?

I thought the current seats are the best so far and is fairly hard wearing with an interesting pattern, there's enough gaps between seats to sit comfortably.

I have no issues with them, I think the workshop have done a good job updating them and maintaining it, the original yellow greenish tartan pattern seat was horrible and puke inducing to look at, the material threads used to creak with every notching up of power.

Isn't that why Central was closed last weekend, to enable this work to be done?

That's not how rail operations work. Far more efficient just to wait until you have enough units.

Now, that would take longer than 'the next few days', which would mean the likes of the Echo aren't accurate, but if you've ever read the Echo, you'd know it wasn't their first time.

I've no complaints about the insides, they are comfy, as you say, and have served well. The outsides are looking very patchy, though. The wraps are aging and there are usually quite a few bald spots.

Given the behaviour of some of the boozed-up National lot, probably for the best!
Yes, I'd say you're right there!

Does anyone know if the future 777 deliveries will still need to go to Crewe first for whatever 'work' was carried out before delivery to Kirkdale? also will all units require mileage?

I believe there is a second attempt being made tomorrow to deliver 777 140 so we can see where that goes - if it actually turns up this time, of course.

As the 777's are finally entering service, is there any timeframe on when the 507/508 fleet will be fully withdrawn and scrapped?

I estimate two years transition, Kirkby then Ormskirk will be converted first, Southport - Hunts Cross, the Wirral branches then the last to convert is the longest route Liverpool to Chester.

It could be worth either starting a new thread, or asking a moderator if this older thread (Legacy 507/508 thread) could be revived, now that we may be just weeks away from the first retirements of the 507/508s.

6Q62 arrived at Wembley this morning with 777140, 6Q43 due to depart at 1232

0Z43 also in its way from Tyseley

The news of imminent 777 introduction consoled me a little yesterday with the strike news.

The imminent arrival of the 777s in passenger service has also pleased me. At long last, I will have good reason to return to Merseyside! I may have to get my maps out and have a look to see what I can do around the Kirkby area, apart from take some photos before the new bit to Headbolt Lane opens.
