This is in today's Times.

"A low-fare, standard class-only train service between Edinburgh and London King’s Cross will launch this year in direct competition with the state-subsidised London North Eastern Railway company.

It will be the first time in living memory that trains from different operators will compete against each other between the capitals and could present a financial headache for the government and the taxpayer."

Does anyone know what rolling stock they intend to use?

That would be East Coast Trains, using 80x Stock. There's many threads on here discussing their various options.

For general Discussion:

For the stock speficially:

Is that really correct? Surely it was possible to travel by direct train from Euston to Edinburgh and from Kings Cross to Glasgow. Shouldn't they have said "on the same route"?

Well, only if you don't count the Euston-Edinburgh service that Virgin and Avanti have run since the dawn of privatisation...
Where will they be stopping?
Please see the threads I've linked to

Euston-Edinburgh is actually a more recent innovation when Virgin Trains joined together the Euston-Wolves and Brum-Edinburgh service - somewhere in the early 2010s, I think.
