if this has been asked before please accept my apologies.
could anybody inform me what the new track panels, points and ballast etc are doing next to the line from thornaby stn to bowes field jct, seems like new track is going through the new tunnel that was built in conjunction with the building of the new A 1130 rd.

I've often wondered this myself, loads of track panels with some track actually laid (not ballasted however) it's been there for years all gone rusty now. Why on earth are they there, what was the plan?

Sure someone will know, has been like that for a whole now with no visible signs of anything happening. I had a slight suspicion that it may be something to do with the Durham Coast signalling works (just found out that Stranton and Clarence Road signal boxes have been demolished in Hartlepool - RIP).

My understanding of the Durham Coast Resignalling was that it was all to be controlled from Tees box but so far it only covers Ryhope Grange to Hartlepool worked from Ryhope Grange. I would guess the new pointwork is for a future stage to close Greatham, the boxes at Norton and Billingham and Bowesfield?
For some reason the new signals are plated "NS" rather than "RG" ?

Ah cheers! What an odd idea. The old practice of plating signals with the initials of the controlling box made much more sense.

That's a fascinating article and it's great to hear that the Seaham signal has gone to the Stainmore. It was too good to waste.

That article says that Cemetary North was abolished in 2008. Sure it had been out of use longer than that, anyone know for definite when it actuially became redundant?

i expect it was redundant when the Steetley Magnesite works closed but it was certainly burned out in 2008.

The current bridge over the Tees has a weight restriction which means 10mph for anything heavier than a Sprinter. They have built a new bridge immediately north of the old one, and track has been laid roughly over the new formation. I have no idea when traffic will be slewed onto the new formation.

Interesting. I wouldn't expect to see it in use any time soon seeing as I haven't seen any sign of work there for years now.

When you say "a new bridge" there used to be 4 tracks across the Tees but 2 of them were closed in the 70's but the bridge was left in place. Have they not just refurbished that one?

They gonna get rid of the old bridge or repair/upgrade it to make it 4 track over the two bridges? Were building the new bridge in early 2009 when i went past it regularly on the way to uni

When they built the new "tunnel" it was done with dual tubes, the idea being that a new bridge would be built to replace the old which was subject to severely reduced speed limits, 10 Freight, 35 Light DMU.

The new bridge was subsequently built and after completion, ballast arrived followed by several lengths of track.

Not long after, a lot of plant arrived and the area was booked for possession to replace the whole bridge running, tighten the radius from Stockton and replace the points from the Eaglescliffe end. I actually travelled the route on the Saturday morning before the possession and all floodlights were alongside, some personnel were on site and everything was set up.

For reasons unknown, nothing happened, it was cancelled. I would love to know what actually happened?

It wouldn't have been a contract let to Jarvis would it?

Before anybody starts commenting on B***** Jarvis this has nothing to do with them but is NWRs procedure.

Then with the collapse of Jarvis the job gets cancelled and needs to be reprogrammed into the system with another contractor.

No it had been idle for sometime before Jarvis collapsed (assuming that happened last year right?).
