Hi all, I'm looking for some help for train tickets for my brother, to get the cheapest possible.

He'll be travelling from Newcastle to London this saturday (17/07), preferably around 2ish and then from London back to Edinburgh on the tuesday (20/07) any time during the day, but morning is preferable.
He has a railcard.

Thanks

Think these are the cheapest advances I can find:

17/07 NCL - KGX

dep. 14:59 arr. 18:20 £30.35 Adv 16-15

20/07 KGX - EDB

dep. 10:00 arr. 14:25 £31.35 Adv 16-25

the 08:00 and 09:00 departures off Kings Cross are priced a bit more at £35.65 if he needs to be in Edinburgh a bit earlier.

The journey for Newcastle - London on the Saturday looks longer but I can't find anything on nationalrail.co.uk to say there is engineering work, unless I've missed it.

Newcastle - London Terminals Route Any Permitted Super Off-Peak Return is £69.05 (with 16-25 Railcard) valid at any time on Saturdays. For the return journey he can ask for it to be excessed for that leg only to Edinburgh. The Edinburgh - London Terminals Super Off-Peak Return is £71.50 so he would have to pay just (71.50 - 69.05) / 2 = £1.25 for the excess. This means it costs a total of £70.30 for a much more flexible option than being tied down to one specific train.

For the return journey to Edinburgh (assuming he leaves from King's Cross) he is allowed to catch any train between 0929 and 1457 inclusive & at or after 1859. If he wishes to travel earlier in the morning, he could catch any Virgin Trains service from Euston and go via West Coast Main Line as Railcard discounted tickets have the concession with Virgin to be able to travel at any time.

I think it is worth paying the extra £8 or so for the flexibility. Just an idea.

bb21 are you sure about this ? I thought that a railcard discounted off peak ticket being valid on a Virgin peak train would only be allowed if that specific route was priced by Virgin trains ? Isn't London - Edinburgh priced by East Coast ?

I agree with General Zod. The work-round is to excess the return leg to an Off-Peak return from Croy which is valid via Edinburgh, valid for break of journey, and priced by Virgin. In summary:
  • With a Railcard, buy a £69.05 Newcastle - London Super Off-Peak Return. This is valid on any Newcastle - London train on Saturday 17 July.
  • If it is convenient to return from Kings Cross on Tuesday 20 July between 0929 and 1457 or after 1859, excess the return leg to a Railcard discounted Edinburgh - London Super Off-Peak Return at an extra cost of £1.25.
  • If that is not convenient, excess the return leg of the Newcastle - London ticket to a Railcard discounted Croy - London Off-Peak Return. (There is no Croy - London Super Off-Peak Return.) This fare is £71.55, so the excess should be (71.55 - 69.05) / 2 = £1.25 again! On Tuesday 20 July, use this to travel Euston - Carlisle by any Virgin train, then Carlisle - Edinburgh by any train (or on the 08:43 Euston - Edinburgh 14:22 through Virgin train).
