why does Newhaven have three stations?

It seems odd the station now best served by the harbour is the one without anything sea related in its name Newhaven Town

Presumably the harbour has downsized over the years... never been on the Seaford branch

Anyway, update. All thats left on the platform side is the brick wall just next to temp fence, the rest is all gone. Next will be the quay side section. More pics hopefully in two weeks time.

It's because the type of ferries in use has changed over the years, and their berthing arrangements have been moved and/or altered. Car and lorry handling arrangements specifically for modern Ro-Ro operations will have been introduced and foot passenger routes altered as well to reflect the changed operations.

AFAIK the Town and Harbour stations are original, the Marine a later addition to cope with the Dieppe ferry traffic. It wasn't accessible by services to and from Seaford, so only ever had boat trains (including the odd one from/to Brighton for daytrippers, the predecessor of the ghost train). Local passengers for the ferry used to have a short walk from the Harbour station otherwise.

Changing patterns of ferry services, starting many years ago with Sealink RoRo ferries, means that the ferry terminal has relocated inland and west away from the railway. Does anyone now use Harbour?

Found the answer to my question in a post from Sarah Jane on another thread (#107) - bus drivers to and from the nearby depot. http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=122716&page=8

Yes, the harbour was once full of rail served quay sides and sidings. Marine station was right next to where the cross channel ships loaded (it still is), so you would go straight out the doors and onto the ship. However, it was a terminal station, so harbour served the area as well, as well a an industrial area, but was served by trains to and from Seaford. Town was closer to the bridge and thus the town centre over the river/port. These days ferries are all about HGV and car traffic. So you need long storage/wating/holding areas. So folks get off at town, walk to the terminal, then the holding areas are along the line to Harbour station, and then the ferry waits till just outside of Marine. What few foot punters are bused from the terminal to the ferry.
Google maps show the situation quite well.

As can be inferred from station lease plan (available on ORR's public register), Marine used to be regarded as a platform of Harbour station. It only became a separate entity at privatisation.

Then in that case they wouldn't really need to go through the formal closures procedure to divest themselves of it would they? All they have to do is claim they're closing one platform at a station that remains open...

Shame it's all being removed. Not that there's really any reason for it to be there anyway.

A few years back there was a closure down that way and rail replacement coaches were in use. What I found amusing was our coach actually stopped at Marine station...

Somewhat surprised that on this route they even bother still offering a foot fare. At Dover, on foot you can only go to Calais, with P&O, DFDS don't take foot passengers to Dunkirk

Doesn't help that Dunkirk ferry terminal is in the middle of nowhere- if they offered foot passenger fares, they'd have the expense of running a bus service the other end.

Day trips from the Brighton area to Dieppe have a long history. Even though Dieppe port is no longer in the town centre, it's not an impossible walk. As I believe the ferry is subsidised by the town of Dieppe, they might even run to a bus.

If it were still just a platform of Harbour, it could be closed using the much simpler and far less time-consuming minor modification procedure.

Well all that's left now is some twisted metal and a brick wall. Will be doing the ghost train this coming week, so new photos soon, perhaps even the right way up!!

Would that have been unique in that a train calling at both Harbour and Marine would have, in one journey, called at one platform of a station, then another platform straight afterwards?

I do believe it was given (and possibly still has) a platform number of 3, even when it was officially separate from Harbour station.

My recollection of travelling there in the 1970s was the “boat train” platform was mostly only used by trains that ran non-stop to Victoria. So they didn’t also stop in the other part of Newhaven Harbour station.

Update: Trains have been banned from going to Newhaven Marine as it seems the old building was full of Asbestos and good practice might have been ignored during the demolition. Further updates to follow.

Bit of an "oh dear" ranging to a "oh bugger" moment regarding the asbestos.
