But, again, this is a false dichotomy. You ask us to hypothetically choose between a Pacer and no train - in fact the choice should be between a Pacer and say a 158 or 158 or something new. And then the answer is we'd like a 158 or 158 or something new.
But if no other train was available what then? Cancel the service or run it with a 142. Imagine if it had been cancelled and it got into the public forum that they could have run it with a pacer but chose not to as they were pulled 2 days ago and some people might be upset that it was a 142.

Oh for the days when Heaton were short of working Pacers and you got a 37 on a set of Mark 1s!

It makes sense to keep a few 142s in working order 'just in case'.

I fear the anti Pacer brigade would have rid regardless of consequence.
It just seems the stupidity of the railways to withdraw stock when there are still short forms and cancellations.
Best keeping some for back up.

Actually that seems to have happened to an extent. There are only 12 Northern 142s running today. Two are on the Bishop Auckland line, the rest are around Manchester. Three of those are running solo on diagrams that should be pairs.

The three 142’s at botanic 21 26 and 60 are definitely still there and were moved on Sunday evening out to the back of the shed as the line on which they were stored is used for other units which are in regular service as space at the depot is limited. Cheers.

That's why it's stupid!
Short formations when they are withdrawing usable stock that can
still be utilised, but they choose to withdraw them and run shorter trains.

Should couple Pacers and Sprinters for now
I definitely agree and I'm sure in private the TOCs do too but the Pacers have now become toxic to passengers, politicians and the press. Even people on here were demanding refunds and discounts for the 'failure' to withdraw Pacers. Unfortunately Politicans influenced by the media have meant that there is no conceivable way the Pacers could not be withdrawn at the earliest possible opportunity.

For what it's worth, 142078 spent the morning reclining against the stops on Plat 8 at Picc, and 090/?4/62/35 coupled in a siding opposite Longsight.

Absolutely. The press and local politicians have been pressing Northern to withdraw the Pacers at the earliest opportunity for some time. The GM Mayor is one of them, yet he advocates more Metrolink extensions, even though the trams ride worse than pacers with bad bogie hunting at speed, few seats and have no toilets.

In the early 1990s, I used to travel around West Yorkshire often. Back then, most of the track in the area was already constant welded. The Class 141s gave an acceptable ride most of the time. In fact they were my favourite Pacers, mainly because all except 141113 retained their SCG gearboxes.

Guessing the shildon nrm is where one will be preserved or is that just temporary storage?

No it's a large set of sidings formerly used in connection with the mine complex in the Selby area.

I wouldn't describe it as 'warm storage' - except in the sense that they'll soon feel a warm gas axe, of course.

Cold storage prior to movement to whichever scrapper has the contract for that unit.

Looks like 001's Heaton to Shildon move is the only one happening today at present, from those quoted above.

Meanwhile, the daily shambolic provision of service for Northern's customers continues...

It did a trip to Hazel Grove yesterday morning. Today it's on the Chester line I believe.
