Are these trainee vacancies? As on the website it just says conductor, but when you click on it says training will be given.

Yes. These are all trainee position. 17.5k whilst training then 25k after passing rules and learning first core route. Great job and good company to work for.

Medical really straight forward so you should be fine, getting in is the hard part but when you do the opportunities are great.

Currently awaiting the results of a driver assessment I took earlier this week with Northern

If worst case scenario I did fail this does make me ineligible to apply for a conductor role for 6 months to?

That's the correct attitude to have, if your application was strong enough for Driver hopefully we will progress, tests are Scatt and 2 tests around tickets , did the Scatt test when getting job as driver for Metrolink so all good, and yeah it's a good experience the assessment day we've done, the way to look at it is if successful you would remain on the 25k whilst training as driver, were as mine would have been some drop for 9 mths , conductor is only 3 months so everything happens for a reason

That’s the way im looking at it.

A job like this will give me a good grounding in the industry which can only be a positive further down the line. The driver process was all abit daunting to start off with but now we both know what to expect we can use this to our advantage.

Hope to see you at assessment day further down the line!

Depends how many have applied.

I applied for Skipton conductor post on 24th April 2013, got invite for visual comparison test the day after and passed, then my application was put in the shortlisting pile.

My interview was on 20th May and I got an invite to psychometric testing at York on 7th June and recived my results a week after on the 13th.

I was placed on hold until September and then placed in talent pool.

Currently still in talent pool but HR rang me last Tuesday saying that they want me to start in January, unsure when the course starts but a conductor trainer told me yesterday that courses are usually at the start of January, so 6th or 13th.

So I think similar timescales will apply for this recruitment intake.

Hope this helps and good luck!

When did you have to complete your visual comparison test by?

Only asking as i'm trying to work out if the timescales are similar in this recruitment campaign to the recruitment campaign in April which I was part of?

Withnailandi:

When should I expect to be sent for a medical?

I have to give a months notice with my current employer and I don't want to serve my notice only then to fail the medical, resulting then in me having no job at all.

As I have said in an earlier post, they are looking at a January start date and I'm hoping the send me for a medical and tell me if I have passed before I need to give a months notice.

Northern are aware of my notice period but I have read on some posts on here that sometimes Northern ring up and ask people to go on a medical and then start a few days later.

Maybe I'm just worried for no reason but if you or anyone else can give me advice I would be most greatful

Good afternoon everyone.

Just to let you know, I applied for the initial run in October (Wigan), I have today received an email inviting me to Wigan later this month for an interview.

Anyone else who applied, check your emails ;)

I am thinking of seeing how things go for the upcoming Conductor Course selections before I consider doing this and I'd be greatful for someone advice.

I'm due to come out of Northerns Skipton talent pool at the end of February 2014.

As this deadline approaches I am thinking of asking HR if they can switch me to the Leeds talent pool to give me a better chance, would this be both advisable and possible?

I live in Bradford so either depot would do, just planning on moving Colne area in the future which was the reason for applying for a Skipton post in April this year.

Also, if I started my career at Leeds, could I apply for a transfer to Skipton at a later date?

Thanks in advance for any info provided

Hi I have applied for conductor at Carlisle and I have been asked to go to Leeds on 3rd Jan 14 for an assessment, I am just asking any advice anyone has for me, I have had a look through the practice material and I am worried about the short time they give you to answer the questions.

I was also extremely worried, even after I sat the assessment I was worried. I passed. The best strategy is to keep calm, work at a reasonable pace, it looks better if you complete less questions and get them all right instead of rushing through and making mistakes. It's common sense tbh, just read the questions carefully. If the job is with Northern you might be doing the SCATT test. I took that in November.

My assessment is 1pm, fingers crossed, I am trying to do the dotty sheets(without much success) it is with Northern, so did you have the dots or just letters? and is it on paper or computer? Well done on your pass, so have you got a date for the course?

It was shapes, but just practice both tests. Northern have the option to offer both I believe. I'm sure you'll be fine!!

Unfortunately not. I have been placed in the talent pool due to the number of successful candidates. I was a little disappointed. They offered me a position with them today, 'Gateline Operator'. I decided to accept, hopefully this won't effect my other application.

What sort of pay do you get and what hours do work as a gateline operator?

Cheers

Pay starts at 16,573 and then rises after 6 months to 17,531. So not quite what I would be earning has a conductor but hopefully this gives me a better chance of getting that role. Not to sure about the shifts but it's 35 hours a week!!
