A very tatty 150 was the rear unit of the 20:44 Alderley Edge to Southport last night - not sure of number. Hope it's one of the next to be refurb'd. The front unit was ex-GWR and in slightly better condition.

Probably getting the 150/1s out of the way before they do the 150/2s and if rumours are true, they be might converted to middle cars for the 150/1s by taking out the drivers cab.

Not sure rumours is the right word there: a 3-car fleet was part of the original published plan at the start of the franchise (though removal of cabs was never confirmed) which included the two orphaned cars from 212 and 217* 209. The "rumour" I've heard is that this plan has been quietly shelved since.

This is the answer i got of a fellow group member on the northern railway connect group;
There was the original intention to form 3 car sets by inserting a 150/2 car inside a 150/1.
These are still required to replace 150 + 153 combos, so the 153’s can go off lease.
I think this has not been done yet due to the units are still required as 2 car, but as the new units come into service, and release the requirements for this then it’s possible this will still happen.
It may also be the reason the angel ones haven’t been sent for refurb recently, as there was ‘rumours’ circulating, that the units to be used as centre cars, were to have the driving cabs removed on refurb to increase passenger space.

Fixed that for you. 150217 is in the TfW fleet.

It would just be easier to hook it up to a gangwayed 15X with accesible toilet, I'm guessing.

That idea on cab replacement seems like an incredible expense to go on units that might only have a decade left?

Seemed an odd idea to me too.... and given the inherent structural issues they've found when just refurbishing the interiors I can't help but wonder if it would have opened a whole Pandora's box of further issues trying to remove cabs.

Had a run out on a GWR 150 (150249) on the Looe Branch yesterday.

The difference in this refurb and the northern tart up is massive. I'd be happy on the GWR 150 for years to come. It looked modern, clean and comfortable.

The seats were comfortable if a little abrasive and the fabric seemed durable.
