I’m not so sure about the 156/9s. If they can’t work with EMRs 156/4s then I assume they won’t be able to work with Northern’s 156/4s?

I believe it is because of the different PIS system, they are ex-Greater Anglia. They will get changed to the PIS in Northern's other trains.

The 9 ex-GA ones (the 156/9s) and 2 to 4 of the ex-EMT ones - these are to replace the 153s and provide extra capacity as they’re only on short-term lease whilst the 170s are phased in with EMR.

That rumour has already done the rounds once, when the WMT transfers were first announced. It transpired that it was completely wrong, and originated with a journalist for one of the railway-related publications adding two and two to make 26

Of course, some people on here with insider knowledge are likely to know more than I do, but until and unless it's officially confirmed, I'm skeptical.

I don't know and I highly doubt it. I thought Northern Trains will be getting 17 at first. It's very confusing if it's either 17 or 26. But we'll have to see what happens.

Keeping it very brief x 17 sounds right for northern. Cannot see x9 being being done at Doncaster other than for further wmt use ie for extra trains as per extra predicted growth in west Midlands by 2026. As per the plan for the devolution for wmt by then to become separate from lnwr and wmt to become part off the devolution and controlled by the west Midlands local authority controll. And these might well stay.
However all said and done anything can happen and does so let's wait and see. Because come tommorow etc, it might well change again.

My guess is either Northern want to increase capacity/service patterns post-covid or Porterbrook offered them a cheap price to lease the remaining 9 given the recent upgrades and the fact that no one else wants to lease them. That is if all 26 are being transferred.

Of Northerns refurb program I think this just leaves 158791 and 861 at Crewe.
A few other already refurbished units have been returning to works for some reason. E.g. i have 158844 at Bristol and 150224 at Wolverton.

Confirmed passing through leamington Spa 8 early with 156496 leading and 156447 on rear on platform 2 rather than the through road. Making a nice rare occasion off a northern unit passing through the platform.

Leeds-Sheffield via Rotherham tends to find a 153 tagging along behind a 150/2 somewhat often.

Also clitheroe to rochdale have 153 tagged on x 4 diagrams. and Wigan north Western to Blackburn x2 153 diagrams. With one x1 153 diagramm Wigan north Western to Leeds via rochdale so that part off network produces the best However that was the December timetable 2020 prior to the covid 19 one now in use. However there is a separate 153 diagram thread for this in the alterations and diagrams section.
