They’re not banned as such from any routes, in fact they are cleared on routes that 158s don’t operate such as the Cumbria Coast, although I can’t recall a single time in which one has operated on the mid-Cheshire route. If these ex-EMR units are going to Neville Hill then there shouldn’t be any problems posed as they’re cleared for most of the routes around there.

As for a bit of speculation, I’d expect these units to fall victim to the Northern random unit generator, or they become the main source of traction on the Leeds to Wigan service, hopefully operating in pairs.

158s aren't allowed on the Buxton line either because the roof-mounted air conditioning equipment won't clear some of the bridges.

156s used to be a staple on there, but it seems to be almost entirely pairs of 150s these days

Leeds-Sheffield via Rotherham tends to find a 153 tagging along behind a 150/2 somewhat often.

There isn't at the moment because they're going to Nottingham. General pattern is

I know up until this year believe it or not was a year ago when Pacers ended on the clitheroes ie February 14th 2020. They where 4 cars but Pacers where smaller. Unless platforms have been extended have sometimes seen on line the odd 4 car sprinter. But good question especially Blackburn to clitheroe iff anyone with local knowledge might know further iff a 4 car 156 or combination could do the service.

That rumour has already done the rounds once, when the WMT transfers were first announced. It transpired that it was completely wrong, and originated with a journalist for one of the railway-related publications adding two and two to make 26

I don't know and I highly doubt it. I thought Northern Trains will be getting 17 at first. It's very confusing if it's either 17 or 26. But we'll have to see what happens.

Keeping it very brief x 17 sounds right for northern. Cannot see x9 being being done at Doncaster other than for further wmt use ie for extra trains as per extra predicted growth in west Midlands by 2026. As per the plan for the devolution for wmt by then to become separate from lnwr and wmt to become part off the devolution and controlled by the west Midlands local authority controll. And these might well stay.
However all said and done anything can happen and does so let's wait and see. Because come tommorow etc, it might well change again.

When I worked at Northern a few years ago before moving to my current TOC, it was confirmed that all 323s would come to Northern. Of course that was 2018/19 so things may have since changed.

Yes, they have operated the Rochdale to Blackburn/Clitheroe services up to the time of the first lockdown, however it’s less common nowadays as they are now concentrated on Leeds to Wigan services, as well as occasionally showing up on other services such as the Settle and Carlisle line.

I think they've all been refurbished with the new Northern moquette now - so should be cleaner (for the time being).

I hope so, when I was in the North in September I had two 3 cars out of Leeds in the nasty plain blue and they’re grimy, much worse in my opinion than the 158 I took to Carlisle the next day which had the original Purple and White seat covers that are now all gone.

I know that platform extensions have taken place at Hall i'th Wood, presumably so they can take the longer trains, Bromley Cross already could, but not sure about the stations further away from Manchester than that.

Having looked at the Sectional Appendix, Hall I'th Wood is now, Up 94m / Down 92m, Bromley Cross 95m (Both), Entwistle 99m (Both), Darwen 94m (Both), interestingly between Clitheroe and Blackburn all the stations have platforms just less than 80m long and between Bolton and Manchester Victoria (in one of the upcoming plans these trains become stoppers), it is only Moses Gate which is less than 92 m at 85m. Clifton is fine for it's daily train at 95m, although I think this is now done by a Southport service.

They’ve all had the new two tone blue moquette on the original seats a few months now. They look absolutely fine although the seat base cushion is too thick so you sit too high up for the table and armrest.

We must be talking about different covers then. I’m talking about the dirty plain blue introduced around 2016. I know a couple have received the current Northern seat covers since but certainly wasn’t all of them when I was in Leeds a few months ago.

As I mentioned in post 8959 they’ve all been changed to the current style now.

I believe it is because of the different PIS system, they are ex-Greater Anglia. They will get changed to the PIS in Northern's other trains.

Didn't Greater Anglia go with a TrainFX system, which is I think the same system Northern use on Sprinters? In that case its the 'non ex GA' ones that wont have a compatible PIS.

No. You've got it the wrong way round - GA 156s were fitted with a class 170 compatible PIS. EMT fitted their units with the awful TrainFX.

The EMT 156s seem to me to be in a better condition (bar the Angel ex Northern 4 which aren't part of the deal anyway) having had a load more work done but the ex GA 156s are booked in for a comprehensive overhaul anyway so I guess it doesn't make much difference!
