Hello,

I am looking for some advice on permitted routes between Nottingham and Worksop.

I would like to travel direct to worksop, but return via Lincoln. National rail enquiries and the east coast website lists an off peak day return route any permitted for £8 and allows it to be selected with a route travelling via Lincoln. There is however a fare of £11.60 routed via Lincoln which is also listed. Does this mean the £8 fare is not valid?

Many thanks,

Ian.

Nottingham - Worksop via Mansfield is the shortest route and always permitted.

Nottingham - Newark - Lincoln - Retford - Worksop is not a mapped route, though

Nottingham - Newark - Retford - Worksop is
as is
Nottingham - Newark - Lincoln - Barnetby - (Doncaster) - Retford

However as you say NRE shows the 'Any Permitted' ticket valid Nottingham - Newark - Lincoln - Retford - Worksop, so you could rely on that even though it's technically not valid.

Thanks for your help. Would I be risking any kind of penalty fare if the conductor disagrees with the route or just be expected to pay the excess to the via Lincoln fare?

"(e) If you make your journey by a route other than those referred to in (a) and (b)
above, you will be liable to pay an excess fare. This excess fare will be the
difference between the price paid for the ticket you hold and the price of the
lowest priced ticket(s) available at a ticket office for immediate travel that would
have entitled you to travel by that route."

No.

If you stick rigidly to the itinerary given which is formed as part of the contract when you purchased the ticket, then the itinerary should be honoured.

Lincoln - Saxilby - Gainsborough Lea Road - Retford is not technically part of a permitted route. If you travel that way, you should be liable for a Lincoln - Gainsborough Anytime Day Single (£6), unless it is part of the itinerary you booked with.
