Jack or Stephens,
Was it invite only or could you actually go to the ticket office and pay to ride the APT. Excuse my ignorance if it's common knowledge to everyone else.
Cowley, If ever someone does build that time machine, you can certainly count me in to go bashing. I'd gladly pack a star jumper n flares (probably still fashion in now in Cowley's neck of the woods;)) and ride the rails in the early and mid 70s. I could only imagine the sheer confusion of where the hell to go first on an ALR. From John o Groats to Land's End loco hauled was king.

Don' t know about buying tickets from a ticket office, My Dad worked on the railway and managed to get tickets that were available for staff.

Had to go to ticket office at Preston and obtain a free "boarding pass". In true BR fashion, this just consisted of a small piece of paper with the words 'InterCity APT Boarding Pass' photocopied to the nth degree. The ticket clerk would then stamp this pass and write your coach and seat number. Not a great souvenir, but still a nice reminder of travelling on what was then thought to be the train of the future.

As for the train itself: I was certainly impressed, my wife less so as the tilting did make her feel queasy even though our journey was on a dark evening.

I had three trips in the APT. The first was on 09/03/1984 as a staff train departing at 16:30 from Euston to Glasgow Central. The formation I recorded as 48106+48602+48303+48406+49006+ 49003+48201+48503+48607+48107. I boarded at Euston and got off at Crewe. My memories of this journey included sitting in my allocated seat and the headrest falling off plus the tilt not coping too well with the S curve at Wolverton. The tilt was no bother to me but was very noticeable when standing. Being tall I had to look down to peer out of the window.

By 29/08 the same year the train was advertised as an additional service available to the general public departing at 08:02 from Glasgow Central to Euston and 16:30 return. On this August date I boarded at Glasgow with the formation noted as 48106+48602+49001+48607+48503+48303+48406+48201+48107. In my notes for this journey I have the APT running via the Up Helsby between Warrington and Acton Grange Jn plus the slow line from Tring North to Hemel Hempstead. I recall the lively suspension at slow speed along the Up Helsby.

My last journey by class 370 was 12/4/1985 on the 16:30 from Euston between Preston and Glasgow. Again running as an additional service. Unfortunately I have lost the details of the formation.

As described earlier in this thread (apologies for continuing the thread drift ) permission to travel was by boarding pass issued on the day of departure at the calling points which IIR were Euston, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle and Glasgow Central or vice versa. As mentioned the boarding pass was issued free of charge to those with a valid ticket. Running the train as an additional meant it could be cancelled at short notice for whatever reason without issue.

Such a shame the publicity of the press run gave the Government the excuse to kibosh the project.

Thanks for posting this 40065.
It sounds like it would have been an amazingly futuristic experience when compared to say a class 81 on a rake of compo blue and grey mk1s? Which you could’ve easily had on any of those days that year.
It is such a shame that the project was dropped.
I’m sure that they could’ve got it working properly if they were given a little bit longer. With the benefit of hindsight the APT project had so much potential. It probably could’ve easily been updated over the years and maybe even had diesel/hybrid version made.
Not to be unfortunately. But interesting to imagine...

Back on thread Saturday 25/11/1978 was the date of the RPPR Welsh Wonder railtour. Highlights were a pair of 25s out of Paddington piloted from Reading by 46001, a pair of 20s to Blaenavon and a storming run back to Paddington behind a pair of 37s. Some choice track was covered that day.

25/11/79 was a Sunday and gave the opportunity to ride behind 40069 on the 1030 Liverpool - Plymouth via the Cannock line.

Wednesday 25/11/1981 and a unit shortage (caused by a technical issue with theclass 508 braking system on the SWD) gave me the opportunity to sample double headed ED power on the 10:18 Waterloo Portsmouth Harbour and 12:16 return. 73126 and 73129 powering 4TC sets 407 and 423. Of note that day were 4SUB units still in service on the Shepperton branch and 2HAP units on the Hampton Court services mixed in with 4EPBs.

My last 73/0 required for haulage found me aboard the Sunday 1V00 03:55 newspaper train from Victoria on 25/11/1984 diverted away from Dover to Margate via Canterbury West owing to engineering work. I always enjoyed these nocturnal SR journeys for the novelty factor. Making my way home to Basingstoke afterwards found me at Redhill having enjoyed a Gatex ED run behind 73123 plus GLV 9101, 47471 on 1M00 1022 Gatwick to Liverpool. From Redhill I had a direct service to Basingstoke courtesy of more E/W. The 12:16 Gatwick to Reading was diverted from Guildford by way of a reversal at Woking and Basingstoke. Class 119 DMU L585 mileage for more novelty track.

There were booked services using Reading allocated DMMUs serving Basingstoke. There was an 05:20 staff train from Basingstoke to Reading running back to Basingstoke from Reading at 06:26 to form a through service from Basingstoke to Paddington. On Monday 25/11/1985 this was formed of class 117 set L422. However, the 05:20 staff train did occasionally use other DMUs to fill in including bubble cars, class 119 and 101 sets. On one occasion I fell asleep and very unfortunately found myself red penning the triangle sidings at Reading. The set was being swapped.Oops!

Onto 26/11/1979; a Monday. I found myself at London Bridge covering the loco hauled commuter services. Required Crompton 33046 was working 2U19 17:20 London Bridge to Uckfield taken to East Croydon for dud 33204 back on 2U47 from East Grinstead. Though not required 33044 was taken to Sanderstead on the 1821 to East Grinstead. Units back finished the day.

26/11/1981 a Thursday and tge issue with class 508 braking systems found me sampling the Pompey direct commuter service. To get there from Waterloo 50023 was enjoyed as far as Woking on 1V07 06:50 Waterloo - Exeter for a CIG+VEP combo forward. No prizes for which unit I sat in for the journey. At the Harbour 73140+required 73114 were at the head of 2P26 departing at 07:33 plus a rake of mk1 hauled stock. Also at Pompey was 73112+73129 with a pair of TC sets on 1P16 due off at 08:18 . I bailed off 2P26 at Woking for photos and then hopped on 1P16 to conclude my return to London. Proper trains.

26/11/1983 A class 304 unit (bouncy. Bouncy) took me to Liverpool from Crewe. from where I did part of the itinerary of the RCTS Mersey Mariner railtour. This took participants around the Wirral before I bailed at Rock Ferry. Instead of continuing onto Southport with the DMU charter I headed off to Crewe via class 503 mileage to Lime Street, a 115 dmu to to Manchester Oxford Road and a class 303 on the 1305 ex Altrincham. At Crewe a required 33065 ensured I had to return homeward from Shrewsbury.

Nowt of interest got me out travelling on 26/11 till 1989 and one the legendary I MinE charters; this one covering the North Midlands. Ostensibly formed of DMU sets a pair of 20s was used to ensure the train got to Bentinck Colliery. Only downside was only one of the 20s was required for haulage.

Other than the above, disappointingly it has to be said, the 26/11 date doesn’t feature much other than for commuting to work. Not helped by my notebooks from the mid 80s accidentally ending up in a Binliner train after a house move.

40065 - I thought for a moment that I was on the same train as you but when I consulted The Haulage Book, it was the Welsh Wonder Relief that I did which ran a week later. That will doubtlessly feature in my OTDIH for 2nd December in due course.

24th November 1979 A full day's 50 bashing. Literally , as I started on the 00:05 from Paddington and arrived back in Bristol around midnight
50048 Paddington to Plymouth
50015 was added as a pilot from Exeter to Plymouth
50036 Plymouth to Reading
50046 Reading to Newton Abbot
50049 Newton Abbot to Paddington
50033 Paddington to Newton Abbot
50007 Reading to Bristol via Westbury
Not bad, well over 1,000 miles behind 50s in 24 hours

25th November 1980 I started out on a post work 50 bash but got distracted by a winning Duff on the Generator set
50023 Paddington to Didcot
47234 Didcot to Reading
50011 Reading to Paddington

26th November 1983 saw a day trip to Leicester
43046+43122 St Pancras to Leicester
43046+43122 Leicester to St Pancras

Keith, I was onboard the relief train too so your initial thought wasn’t misplaced. Rodent haulage down the Thames Valley was such fun I had to do it again (minus the class 46).

Barrow - Home of the Bluebirds!!!
Wouldn't mind a Tardis back to that day - all bar 47586 would be winners for me!

18/11/84 saw me returning to Birmingham from Manchester. There was some sort of power outage, so I was lucky enough to get 25259 dragging as far as Macclesfield. So excited was I about the rodent that I didn't note the electric at the time. 30 years later, thanks to the interweb, I discovered that 86242 was in charge from Macc to Brum, the red pen being applied belatedly in this case!

I have filled in a few gaps myself using information found online years later, and hoping those reading this thread may help fill a few more for various dates, starting today in 1987

28/11/1987
This must have been a weekend of engineering works as there were diesel drags between Preston and Crewe???.

108 Unit Barrow In Furness to Lancaster
310xxx Lancaster to Preston
31127 dragging 310xxx Preston to Wigan North Western (Same Unit as from Lancaster)
31322 dragging 86422 Wigan North Western to Preston
31461 dragging 87014 Preston to Wigan North Western
47306 dragging 87031 Wigan North Western to Preston
108 Unit Preston to Barrow In Furness

If anyone else was out on these that day and has the unit ID of the 310, please could you let me know so I can fill one of the many gaps in my records in. I think it would be working a Lancaster to Birmingham New Street service. Thanks

02/12/1979 was a Sunday and my moves that day started after finishing work in the warmth of the 00:45 from Euston; 87020 to Bletchley for 45136 forward to Derby via Bedford.

After a bit of a fester 31210 was taken to Sheffield on the 08:10 Birmingham to Leeds via the Erewash Valley and Chesterfield goods lines.

From Sheffield I found my way to Manchester Piccadilly on the 07:50 ex Saint Pancras hauled by 45113 via Woodhead.

After a detour to Buxton and back to Stockport track scratching by BRCW class 104 dmu the journey home was not so exciting with 86036 taken to Wolverhampton for 86033 to Birmingham and 87011 to International, 47103 to Coventry and 87023 back to my starting station.

Whatever happened to rail travel on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings?

02/12/1981 Wednesday. The 22:40 (Tuesday) Euston-Inverness headed by 85018 deposited me at Crewe for the short hop to Chester hauled by 47442 on the 02:23 to Holyhead.

I was heading for a brake van charter over NCB tracks between Littleton Colliery and the BR boundary at Littleton Colliery sidings. This meant two bus journeys from Walsall via Cannock. So it was off to Birmingham from Chester via Manchester (as you do). The 03:00 from Chester to Manchester Victoria DMU included a DMPMV M55993 in the formation (so counts for haulage). The expected class 304 mileage on the 06:30
from Piccadilly to Birmingham and 09:07 from there to Walsall was somewhat reduced by discovering an 06:15 relief to Euston headed by 81020. Dud but taken to Stoke in any case.

After the brake van ride I had to head home to prepare for an early shift the following day. But not before a detour to scratch a bit of track on the way back.

47134 was taken to Leamington from New St via Solihull as cross country services tended to do back then whereupon a 116 dmu was boarded to intercept the 1705 Moor St to Stratford upon Avon at Lapworth. The Hatton avoiding line duly red penned it was back to Leamington and on to Paddington with 50045 hauling the 16:22 from Manchester. Fun over bar the short EPB hop home to Twickenham from Waterloo diverted via Hounslow.

As an aside after work the following day I caught the 14:48 Waterloo to Portsmouth. On this day (03/12/1981) this train was formed of two 4TC sets and 4BIG 7057 assisted by 73131. Sadly I couldn’t enjoy the EML lash up beyond Woking but 50017 was consolation back to Waterloo on the 1420 from Exeter.

Still a few days of 1981 left for a few more jaunts.

I've been very busy for the last few weeks, so haven't been able to contribute anything.
I'm not going to bore everyone by going back through ALL my late November moves, especially as I've got nothing to come close to what's been posted since I was last here - brilliant stuff!

A few highlights, though:

12/11/1989
ECML drags.
47503 Wakefield - Doncaster via Knottingley
47503 Doncaster - Wakefield via Knottingley

12/11/2001
An all-liner (in November!)
47853 Wakefield - New Street
86249 New Street - International
47814 International - Coventry
86245 Coventry - Euston
87024 Euston - Crewe
47818 Crewe - New Street
87033 New Street - Euston
87029 Euston - Coventry
47750 Coventry - Paddington
47815 Paddington - Plymouth

13/11/2001
08663 Plymouth sleeper shunt
57601 Plymouth - Paddington
Underground to Marylebone
165036 Marylebone - Aylesbury
165036 Aylesbury - Marylebone
Underground back to Padd
47813 Paddington - Plymouth
43018/43192 Plymouth - Penzance
47815 Penzance - Paddington

14/11/2001
47822 Paddington - Reading
170308 Reading - Basingstoke
1392 Basingstoke - Waterloo
465180 Waterloo East - London Bridge
456018 London Bridge - Victoria
455821 Victoria - Clapham Junction
1905 Clapham Junction - Victoria
Underground to Fenchurch Street
357035 Fenchurch Street - Upminster
357012 Upminster - Limehouse
357212 Limehouse - Barking
357207 Barking - Fenchurch Street
Underground to Kings Cross
91012 Kings Cross - Wakefield

15/11/2001:
47851 Wakefield - New Street
86247 New Street - International
86226 International - Edinburgh
43110/43096 Edinburgh - Inverness
67028 Inverness - Edinburgh

The run on 86226 was interesting.
The rear coach was a half-brake with the guard's area adjacent to the rest of the train, leaving half a coach isolated from the other seats.
I went in there and had the half coach to myself all the way.
Thinking it was a lightly loaded service I bailed at Waverley and was surprised to see the amount of people crammed into the first five coaches.

16/11/2001:
90221 Edinburgh - Euston
86261 Euston - International
86259 International - Euston
86254 Euston - Manchester Piccadilly
86254 Piccadilly - Euston

I was staying at the Euston Travelodge that night.
After 86259, I went and checked in, then returned to the station.
I realised that a run to Manchester and back would get RES 86254 into the thousand mile club, so that's what I did.

17/11/2001:
It was a Saturday and the Trent Valley was shut for engineering work, with the first four haulages all running via Coventry, Bescot & Wolverhampton.
90007 Euston - Crewe
87030 Crewe - Rugby
90146 Rugby - Stafford
87020 Stafford - Euston
Walk to Kings Cross
91026 Kings Cross - Wakefield

Some early December offerings.
01/12/2007:
A Green party express tour from Huddersfield - at one time they did a lot and they provided an enjoyable day out with a local start.
47804 Huddersfield - Bath Spa
47787 Bath Spa - Huddersfield

02/12
Nil, nada, nothing.

The first four days of December are devoid of locs for me; so I'll jump the gun by 4 hours and go back 37 years to 5/12/1981 when a day spotting at York ended slightly earlier than planned thanks to 55007 being allocated to Trans-Pennine duties, and taking me back to Manchester Victoria.

07/12/1979 Found me going through Customs at London Victoria and then boarding 1V88 2125 London to Dover Western Docks hauled by 73141. Older enthusiasts may know this train better by its marketing brand; the Night Ferry.

I had discovered that if I bought a 1st class through fare ticket being promoted by BR (allowing the purchaser so many hours in Paris) I could pay a supplement to travel on the sleeper train and red pen the ferry berth at Dover in my Quail map.

At Dover the train was shunted onto the mv Saint Germain by 09008 - daily timetabled class 09 haulage no less. The IMO number of the train ferry was 5305895 and her TOPS number was 99011. Does that mean it counts for haulage?

08/12/1979 Having red penned the ferry to Dunkerque Maritime SNCF utilised Baldwin 62024 to drag the coaches off and into Dunkerque Ouest station where day coaches were added for the rest of the journey to Paris.

Departing at 0442 the train made first for Dunkerque Ville by a BB64000 diesel loco. I failed to get the number waking up just about to arrive in Paris with BB 16000 electric 16028 on the front.

I didn’t stay in France long though. I jumped on the 12:30 Flèche d’Or to Calais Maritime departing Nord at 12:30. BB 16000 doyen 16001 doing the honours to Amiens and BB 67400 diesel 67592 thereafter to Calais Maritime.

mv Hengist IMO 7205063 was waiting at the quayside next to Maritime station to whisk passengers across the Channel to Folkestone Harbour.

Once Customs checks were completed a not so exotic 8CEP+4BEP brought me back to where I started my first venture to France.

How shocking it is to reflect how much of the above has disappeared since. The Night Ferry through sleeper did not last another 12 months being withdrawn on 31/10/1980 (I did manage another trip on it the weekend before it ceased to run however).

A very interesting read 40065.

I don't see why the ferry wouldn't count - surely for floatage rather than haulage, though! I did a Devon Ranger back in 2007 (to clear the Exmouth and Gunnislake branches), and a trip from the former across to Starcross ensures the "Orcombe" its place in my moves list...:)

Did the ill-fated "Herald of Free Enterprise" once in the early 80s as well.

and that was it for us when it came to those type of moves; very few, if any, chances to get off and stretch our legs plus very early starts from home meant they lost their appeal to a great extent.

At least Pathfinder have started to do similar tours using DRS locos (one in Feb which had an hour and a bit break at Preston Dock, and I believe one next year which has a break in Blackburn).

But again, it isn't just the cost of the tour to take into account (IIRC £109 for standard class), it is the cost of travel & in some cases accommodation.

Yep, £109 has priced me out the market now.
