Network North West Day 20th October 1990
I have already posted this on one of my threads but thought it was worth dusting down and reposting in this thread too!

In the early 90’s ‘Network North West’ as it was then referred too, occasionally staged some locomotive hauled running days, many trains hauled by freight locomotives. Everything by now being ‘sectorised’. Anyway, Saturday 20th October 1989 was one of these days,

37422 Barrow in Furness to Chorley
26025 / 31434 Chorley to Lancaster
56035 / 31413 Lancaster to Manchester Victoria
155xxx Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe
37691 / 37408 Crewe to Liverpool Lime Street
31132 Liverpool Lime Street to Preston
142xxx Preston to Barrow in Furness

Not a great deal of moves, obviously on that day I went for quality rather than quantity! Interestingly, 37422 made its next appearance in my haulage book on 13th April 2017 on the Cumbrian Coast, 26 and a half years later, and still on a service train!

23 October is also pretty barren for me. However, on that date in 1999 I did a "flit" round the North West which involved 43069 + 43089 from Wigan to Warrington, and then scoring the track from Helsby to Hooton (with compulsory new shack at Ellesmere Port) then also new track into and out of Manchester Airport, on a through train from Crewe to Piccadilly, powered by 170510, my first of this class.

Just read this and only yesterday I saw this on a Railway related Facebook group. Which I'm sure will be of interest to you and Mr 13, the photo is credited to Steve Bap, who added 26025 and 31434 and half the world await to leave Barrow.FB_IMG_1540248441614.jpg

Great photo indeed, I echo the thanks.

I've never done anything of note on the 23rd of October, but the 24th has thrown up a couple, including some from the poorly recorded (by me) 1980s.

24/10/1984:
45140 Leeds - Huddersfield
45138 Huddersfield - Leeds
45127 Leeds - Dewsbury
45128 Dewsbury - Leeds
40086 Leeds - Huddersfield

24/10/1987:
47418 Huddersfield - Leeds
45106 Leeds - Wakefield
43039/43080 Wakefield - Leeds
47413 Leeds - Huddersfield
Unknown traction to Wakefield
45106 Wakefield - Leeds
A very rare occurrence of me recording the HST on this move.
It was one of the first moves I did after a couple of years out.

24/10/2003:
37405/37408 Leeds - Carlisle
37408/37405 Carlisle - Leeds

Pair of 37s over the S&C very nice indeed. Another of my fave gennies in that list too 47413, always had a thrash fest behind that one. I was shocked to read you'd recorded the zing moves too. I always wrote them down, especially the ones on the Newcastle-Swansea/Plymouth, as they were generally ones i required for sight at the time.

Not half. That was a glorious few months :)
The first time I did the S & C Syphons was 18th October 2003 and my last run was on 1st July 2004.
37405/37408 and 37411 were the main locos, although a couple of no heat ones also appeared.
It's a shame, from my point of view, that when Northern reintroduced loco hauled services they chose the Cumbrian Coast (I know the reasons why they did) instead of the Settle and Carlisle.

I was shocked to read you'd recorded the zing moves too.

Me too!

And so on to today.

25/10/1997:
A nice day out with four of us doing a railtour from close to home.

37097/37407 Huddersfield - Cardiff
37097/37407 Cardiff - Huddersfield

25/10/2003:
An excellent day for 45135 and myself at the GCR(N).
Following a series of e-mail conversations with a senior chap at the line, cab rides were arranged for us.

25279 Ruddington - Rushcliffe Halt (with a run round at Fifty Steps Junction)
Here we met our contact.
50007/37075 Rushcliffe - Loughborough. I was in the cab of 44004, which was on the rear; Carl was on the train.
44004 Loughborough - Fifty Steps, with me in the cab.

44004_2003.10.25_Cab Ride_Forward view_a by Phil Wood, on Flickr

25279 Fifty Steps -Ruddington. I was still in the cab of the Peak and Carl was now in the cab of the 25, having got in at Rushcliffe Halt.
As the 44 was well off the platform when I got off I had the opportunity to get a unique shot.

44004_2003.10.25_Ruddington_a by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I then walked back to the platform and boarded the train having had a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Carl remained on the Rat.

44004 Ruddington - Fifty Steps
25279/50007 Fifty Steps - Rushcliffe Halt
37075 Rushcliffe Halt - Fifty Steps
25279 Fifty Steps - Ruddington
37075 Ruddington - Fifty Steps
25279 Fifty Steps - Rushcliffe Halt
44004 Rushcliffe Halt - Loughborough
37075 Loughborough - Rushcliffe Halt
50007 Rushcliffe Halt - Fifty Steps
44004 Fifty Steps - Ruddington

Given his user name you might expect 45135 would have preferred the 44 but we didn't know what the traction would be when it was arranged and it just fell that way.
The good news for him was that class 25s have very good cab heating. It was a very cold day and he was toasty and warm.
The same couldn't be said about me on the Peak.
Frozen fingers notwithstanding it had been a fabulous day out for both of us and one that we both look back on fondly.

2014 is the only time that I seemed to have done anything of interest on 25th October when it was a full blown trip in Greater Manchester taking the red pen out for a jolly!
25th October 2014
Dud 390047 provided the traction From Euston to Stockport. Thereafter the following fell victim to my red pen
142042
150145
156420 156424 156426
175104
185119 185133 185146
323227 323230 323239
350401
390155
Winner 390132 provided the traction home
Plenty more units were cleared for the obligatory 10 miles

26th Ocober 1979 saw me heading to Manchester for a job interview
47484 Bristol Temple Meads to Cheltenham Spa
31413 Cheltenham Spa to Birmingham New Street
37234 +37248 were the Lickey bankers - I made sure I was in the back coach to capitalise on the thrash
86021 Birmingham New Street to Manchester Piccadilly
86233 Manchester Piccadilly tro Birmingham New Street
47540 Birmingham New Street to Didcot
47029 Didcot to Reading
50022 Reading to Paddington
And bad news, I did not get the job.

25/10/2003 saw me visiting the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Gala. 24081, 37099, 37215 and 47376 were scored, dud 47105 was sampled, and I had my first experience of Class 14, with an outrageously feisty performance from D9539. It may have resembled the illegitimate offspring of a Tardis, two Junction Boxes and a Pannier Tank, but boy, was it noisy - and remarkably nippy off the mark... :)

That’s got to be the best description of a class 14 that I’ve ever heard.

The driver of 45029 encouraged me into the cab for a trundle up and down Nuneaton for a half hour. How things have changed.

Of note is 47497, which later became the last "shove", 47717.

26/10/1999
47849 Wakefield - Birmingham New Street
37429 New Street - Wolverhampton

47814 International - New Street
90009 New Street - International
87026 International - New Street
HST New Street - Wakefield

A nice day out from the time before you needed to take out a second mortgage to buy a Wakefield to Birmingham return.
37042 was dud but an enjoyable addition to moves book; it was on a VXC International terminator, presumably from Manchester.

26/10/2001:
A West Yorkshire Day Rover, with some interesting numbers.

91109 Wakefield - Leeds
90238 Leeds - Wakefield
43158/43156 Wakefield - Leeds

90142 Leeds - Wakefield
91029 Wakefield - Leeds
91002 Leeds - Wakefield
91025 Wakefield - Leeds
91029 Leeds - Wakefield

A rare run behind one of the short lived 90/2s, Freightliner's 90142 and a mix of refurbished 91s and those still to be done.

27/10/1989:
47588 Huddersfield - Leeds
47406 Leeds - Keighley
DMU Keighley - Leeds
91005 Leeds - Wakefield

47588 was in Speedlink livery, which was a nice change from the usual Pennine machines.

The 27th October is not throwing up much of interest
27th October 2003
43019+43170 Paddington to Cardiff on a work trip
I returned to Bristol the following evening.
43019 is of note being written off in the accident at Ufton Nervet level crossing

28th October 1985 saw one of my regular ventures down the Southend Victoria branch with a twist
302282 Liverpool Street to Rochford
302282 Rochford to Shenfield
made the -3 on to the last up on the main line so bailed across for
86233 Shenfield to Liverpool Street

29th October 1982 saw a mini track bash in Kent (Sheerness branch) using some rateable units
1529+6108 Victoria to Rainham
7882 Rainham to Sheerness
7209 Sheerness to to Sittingbourne
1597+6151 Sittingbourne to Victoria
All winners apart from 1597

29th October - nothing other than a second day at the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway in 2006, featuring the same locos.

29/10/79 - 47513 was motive power from Leeds to York on a spotting trip. That's the only move I have for that date in any year.

30/10/85. Birmingham area nedding, four round trips from New Street to International with 47435, 86240, 47474, 47459, 47611, 47608, 47588 and 86220; then an evening trip to Dorridge to pick up 50035 on 1M61.

30/10/2012 was a West Yorkshire Rover day, with highlights being 91127 from Leeds to Wakefield W, 43277 + 43309 on the same move a few hours later and 91103 back to Leeds after the latter.

Cross Country diversions were on, so we decided to get a bit of unusual track for 47/8s.
The day began with a drive to Stockport.

87011 Stockport - New Street
47841 New Street - Swindon
47847 Swindon - New Street
87013 New Street - Milton Keynes
90001 Milton Keynes - Stoke
47853 Stoke - Wolverhampton
47805 Wolverhampton - Leamington Spa
47492 Leamington Spa - New Street
86244 New Street - Stockport

The train from Leamington was really late due to morons chucking a brick through the driver's window of the original loco. This was 47523, a loco that I never managed to get :(

1s November: Nothing of note.

Was at my Grans, in Goole, and had an afternoon trip to Hull. Class 124/123 hybrid power with E51952/E52100 took me there, then unrecorded DMUS took me to Cottingham and back (the purpose of this early Shack scratch being to cop 03063/073/112 for sight whilst passing Botanic Gardens shed), then 55017 provided superior power back.

2/11/84 saw the first of many Day Tripper tickets round the Birmingham area. This one produced 85002, 86237, 81018, 47226, 85034, 86213, 86260 and 47598.

2/11/2000 saw me heading to Berwick via the scenic route - lift to Deansgate, 156464 to Piccadilly, 158757 to Preston, 86236 to Glasgow Central, 170402 from Queen Street to Edinburgh and finally 91022 down the coast.

4/11 is a dull date for me. Five DMUS only on that date, three of which were the ubiquitous 155344... :)
