6th October 1980 Saw another after work leap
50023 Waterloo to Basingstoke. On the train I had gen about two winners so modified the evening's bash accordingly
73138 Basingstoke to Waterloo
50047 Waterloo to Basingstoke
33062 Basingstoke to Waterloo

7th October 1979 This was to be another day bashing 50s but a late start was in order so the nearest 50s to Bristol were either Westbury or Taunton.
37293 dragging Class 120 DMU Bristol TM to Westbury
50026 Westbury to Newton Abbot
50043 Newton Abbot to Westbury
50021 Westbury to Newton Abbot
50041 Newton Abbot to Exeter SD
50037 Exeter SD to Westbury
31254 Westbury to Bristol TM

I certainly did not complain at the winning 37 on the way out to Westbury . Made the DMU ride all that more enjoyable!

6th October seemed to be a date I headed down south, or returned therefrom.

6/10/87 saw me visiting Plough Lane, Wimbledon, to watch Rochdale lose in the second leg of their League Cup tie to then-first-division Wimbledon. Subsequently exiled to South wales, 142074 took me from Rochdale to Manchester Victoria, then winner 86421 took me from Manchester Piccadilly to Euston, then 455711 from Waterloo to Wimbledon, whence I made the long walk up to the ground. After the match, I made my way to Haydon's Road, which was a lot closer to Plough Lane, then Class 415 5444 took me to London Bridge. The Northern Line got me to Euston in time for the "Splitter" - as the former sleeper to Manchester and Liverpool was known. And this produced what in hindsight was a superb result - not only was it roaring, but it was an 81, and it was required 81002 to boot. Result - unlike the football...:)

Fast forward 7 years to 1994, and I was finishing working on secondment in London for a few days. We had plenty of time to get from South Kensington (where we were based) to Euston, so I took the following route - tube to Victoria, 411515 to Herne Hill, 319029 to Tulse Hill, 455804 to London Bridge then 319182 through to Kings Cross Thameslink, for a beer and a walk to Euston. And a nice winner home with 87017.

Other than this, the only moves on that date are Rochdale to Manchester/Salford commutes, although these do include heritage bogcart 101683 from Manchester to Salford Central on 06/10/98...

I do not think that class 415s have had much of a mention in this thread thus far. The EPBs were excellent for thrash value and as every basher knows, the EPB designation has absolutely nothing to do with braking systems. Instead the designation stood for Every Passenger Bounces! And while I have already mentioned to up working (the "Joiner") in this thread, the equivalent down "Splitter" now gets a welcome reference. Almost every time, I encountered either working, it was some form of Roarer or at worst, a Class 86/0.

Still raiding the archives ...

8th October 1980
50001 Waterloo to Basingstoke
73122 Basingstoke to Waterloo

Yet another winning Class 73, and the final one for 1980. But it would be almost seven years before I would clear the class in their original configuration, mainly because bashing would tail off for a few years.

Early October seems to have been a quiet time for me over the years.
Nothing of note from the 6th to 8th and just a couple of heritage line visits on the 9th.

2004 saw me paying a short visit to the NVR.
Locos sampled were 40106, 56057 & 66709.

2009 was the SVR, with 08015, 08769, 20059, 20188, 37264, D821, 47580, 50035, 50044, D1013 & D1062 being enjoyed.

11/10/2003 was the date for my first, and so far only, visit to the Llangollen Railway. 20142, 25313, 37240 and 46010 were all winners on full line runs, whilst 08195 was sampled on a brake van shuffle. Nice day out, with Ruabon being shack-scratched before I'd heard of the term!

Like D841Roebuck I was at the Llangollen.
The day started with 03162 doing a brake van trip, then 08195 took over.
Then it was:
25313 Llangollen - Carrog
46010 Carrog - Llangollen
46010 Llangollen - Carrog
47449 Carrog - Llangollen
37240 Llangollen - Carrog
37240 Carrog - Llangollen

This was the only time I had 03162 (up to now), which is not used much, if at all, these days.

03162_2003.10.11_2_Llangollen by Phil Wood, on Flickr

12/10/98:
I heard an interesting 90 was on its way to Leeds, so popped out.
90030 featured three times, with 91003/004/005/007/021/023 & 029 filling the rest of the time.
I finished with 47844 on 1V67.

12/10/2002:
Llangollen diesel gala.
Three round trips, one each on 25313, 46010 and 47449.

I've never done anything of interest on the 13th of October, but the 14th is a different matter.

14/10/1989:
A brief soiree over the Pennines saw me enjoying 85040, 87030 and 90030 before returning to Yorkshire behind 47424.

14/10/2005:
The SVR diesel gala.

D1013 Bridgnorth - Bewdley
73005 Bewdley - Arley
31452 Arley - Kidderminster

14/10/2006:
One of my most extreme weekends.
I left home in the early hours and drove to Devon for the Dartmoor Railway diesel event.
Dutch "08" 663 Okehampton - Meldon
73117 Meldon - Okehampton
50042 Okehampton - Meldon. Triumph was the only 50 still in existence that I needed and was the main reason for my visit.

37905 Coleford Junction - Meldon
50042 Meldon - Coleford Junction
37142/37198 Coleford Junction - Okehampton
After an excellent day I set off driving North, stopping overnight for a kip at a Motorway service station motel.

Catching up with this thread.
Some cracking moves. The Grouser Railtour sounded fun Keith. 37293 dragging a dead unit, a case of all plans went out the window, when you see stuff like that.
Mr 13 some of your moves especially on the ALR had me thinking, why didn't I do more of this kind of stuff. Some great locos in all these postings. Done a fair few of the Man Vic-Barrow turns, normally Preston-Lancaster leaps with the 31s, however I think by the 90s came in then my interest was waning, then in a fit of pique I walked after the loco hauled Pennine turns went from loco to 158s, my mind was made up. Shame cos it seems I missed out on a load of stuff.
Keep em coming folks. Love reading these.

I was at the Dartmoor do as well. It was an excellent day including a fast run down to Coleford Junction in the morning behind a graffitied 31465 with the pair of blue 37s at the back.
Here’s a screenshot from Martyn Reads YouTube clip of the 31 spinning its wheels trying to get to the station at Meldon.

It was a bonkers day out and somewhere I’ve got a few shots that my cousin took of the blue 37 and 50 surrounded by all the quarry equipment just like twenty years earlier.

That’s just brilliant. Pretty much all the buildings and conveyors etc have gone now.
The other thing that I remember was the line of mk2s, 31s and 73s all parked up and rusting away at Meldon.
They did another gala the year after that was good too.
The early morning trip behind 31465 with the aircons through the morning mist to Coleford Junction was fast, like 50/60mph I reckon. I was at the other end so that I had the front droplight behind the 37s.
Excellent day out.
Forgot about the 73 on the shuttle as well.

15/10/2006:
After a night's kip in the motel following my visit to the Dartmoor Railway and after clearing it with my wife, I drove from the South West to the North East.

16/10 seems to be a loco-free zone for me. It is, however, the date of my only recorded 141 haulage, with 141113 taken from Leeds to Knottingley and back in 1993 :)

Got a bit of catching up to do on account of being away at the weekend selling books (what else?)
13th October 1979 was spent bashing 50s all day
50034 Plymouth to Reading
50032 Reading to Paddington
50020 Paddington to Exeter St Davids
50018 Exeter St Davids to Reading
Reading to Plymouth for a 1h45 m wait for the up midnight so a swift one or two in the pub followed by some "cabbage" chips from the nearby takeaway.

14th October 1979 and I was on the Pennine Explorer. Started with a fast car from Nottingham to Derby
47181 Derby to Burton on Trent
46008 Burton on Trent to Derby
46010 Derby to Birmingham New Street
Now to pick up the tour
40024 Birmingham New Street to Manchester Piccadilly (Birmingham New Street - Dudley Port - Wolverhampton - Stafford - Crewe - Sandbach - Middlewich - Northwich - Altrincham - Deansgate Jn - Skelton East Jn - Northenden Jn - Edgeley Jn -Stockport - Manchester Piccadilly)
76009+76019 Manchester Piccadilly to Rotherwood Sidings and back (Manchester Piccadilly - Guide Bridge - Dinting - Woodhead - Penistone - Woodburn Jn - Tinsley - Attercliffe Jn - Darnall - Rotherwood -Woodburn Junction (reverse of outward) Manchester Piccadilly)
40024 Manchester Piccadilly to Birmingham New Street (Manchester Piccadilly - Stockport - Wilmslow - Sandbach - Crewe - Stafford - Wolverhampton - Dudley Port - Birmingham New Street)
37204+37282 Birmingham New Street to Cheltenham Spa
47102 Cheltenham Spa to Birmingham New Street
47147 Birmingham New Street to Derby

As well as a fistful of winners, some required track was scored.

15th October 1985 and I had meetings in Birmingham. Thankfully I managed winners both ways
87004 Euston to Birmingham New Street
85024 Birmingham New Street to Euston

The 16th of October proved difficult to find anything of interest but on 16th October 1985 I went to see my girlfriend (now the renowned Mrs Keith) who was living and working in the environs of Southend on Sludge
302267 Liverpool Street to Rochford
302231 Rochford to Liverpool Street
Have we had any 302 thrash before in this thread? Sadly both were dud but with regular trips to Rochford in the years 1984-86, that's not a surprise

Is that before it expired in a cloud of smoke?

Although that would be better than some random Japanese EMUs I had on this day back in 2015

It wasn’t a 50 Kite (sorry 55013 ;))...

A trip up the bank behind any loco standing at the front window as it pounded through the tunnel was three quarters of a mile of pure heaven.
I’d love to be able to do that now.

Just board a heavily loaded 143 trying to climb the hill when it has been raining, that makes a racket

You have a point. There is something quite raw about a 143 revving its heart out climbing up to Central.
I’ve had a few cab rides up there (a couple of 50s and at least one class 33). It’s a proper work out for anything from a standing start.
There’s nothing else quite like it on the network I reckon and even a 143 can be quite enjoyable due to the way they feel quite raw...
(I can’t believe I’m saying these enthusiastic Pacer things by the way, and you’re partly to blame).

Well, my stuff doesn't come close to Keith's but I'll keep going :)

Mr 13, don't run your self down like that - some of your moves are awesome! I'd migrated to other things by then but thankfully always recorded my moves.

Anyway back to OTDIH. 17th October 1987 saw me heading to the Ripple Lane Open day a mere 36 hours after the infamous hurricane hit the south east.
I got the tube to Barking where 53218+53230 + 51361+59513+51399 was working a shuttle into the depot.
On view at the depot were
08750, 08834
20046, 20095
31327
37673, 37891, 37892
47005, 47014, 47016, 47079, 47339, 47378
56001
58050
59001
D200
86235
Steam
48151, 80080
Of note, 08834, 37892, 56001 and 58050 were all displaying their new Trainload liveries following the launch of Trainload Freight two days previously.
I contrived to get the other shuttle back to Barking with 51361+51399

17th to 19th October hold nothing but DMUS for me. The only interesting move was on 17/10/85, where a trip on 142001 from Rochdale to Manchester Victoria was the first of many on Pacers.
