Passengers watching "Adult Material" on the train

Is Fifty Shades of Grey unnaceptable to read on the train? I very often see people reading A Song if Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) books on the train, and there is no shortage of graphic scenes in them, including some extreme sex / rape scenes.

I was on a train once and a man sat opposite me was watching something on his tablet. He stood up to get something from the overhead and accidentally yanked his headphones out the tablet.

The entire carriage was adorned with the noise of a lady. She must have been celebrating something because she was saying yes a lot.

Most new phones don't mute the sound when the headphones are unplugged for no reason

Just looking at the bylaws and I would say watching adult material would breach two parts of Section 6 (unacceptable behavior).

''Unacceptable behaviour'' (molesting/acting indecently etc) suggests having sex would be breaching the byelaws, discreetly viewing adult material wouldn't be breaching the byelaws unless of course you were subjecting someone to watch it against their will.

Regarding Fifty Shades of Grey it may not be offensive as such but realistically would you want to sit next to someone on a train who is reading it? Saying that at Longton station there was for a while a massive billboard at the adult shop there advertising some 50 shades of grey items. Not to mention as well the controversial "are you beach body ready" ads as well on the London Underground.

This has reminded me of being on a train at Blythe Bridge and I overheard some sixth form students tell the guard that there was a bloke watching adult material on the train. Needless to say though the guard walked up the train and caught the man red handed and spoke to him and the bloke was very embarrassed.

I once had a problem when I took a picture on my phone when listening to things it then played whatever I was listening to out of the speaker for about 2 seconds. Needless to say I was listening to A$ap Rocky once while waiting for a tram at Manchester Piccadilly one time and some profanities came out and I felt very embarrassed.

I don't see why there'd be a problem if it was the current issue.

Playboy has not featured adult images since the April 2016 edition.

This may seem an odd topic but what are the rules about watching adult material on trains, obviously the main thing would be things of a sexual nature but also 18 rated movies and occasionally but very rarely 18 rated video games. Also not as extreme but seen by some as inappropriate reading erotic fiction such as Fifty Shades of Grey.

I only ask because given that today most people have a smart phone and it seems to be a growing problem that passengers of both genders think its ok to watch, play or read this type of material on board trains.

I personally find it quite rude to do on trains but obviously people will do it anyway.

What do everyone else thing about people with inappropriate material on the train?

Is this really an issue? Do you come across it often? Ahem. Ha ha. I think I've seen more people actually engaging in sexual acts in public than I have seen them watching porn. The "Reading 50 Shades of Grey" thing is really taking it to the extreme! Should I read Game Of Thrones in public?

When the PSP first came out in 2005 the must have game was Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories but many people at the time didn't have earphones which meant that many places you could hear people playing GTA which itself was annoying although some of the violence sounds and language wasn't really something that you would want minors to listen to.

Agreed. But when it comes to conversations or audio devices it's impossible not to hear if it is loud enough. And screens can be reflected giving one a view even if you don't intend to.

If someone gets a laptop out next to you and starts watching porn on it, I don't think you'd be considered rude for noticing... It'd be unavoidable!

That's a deliberate intent to watch/find out what the passenger is watching. Yes I'd agree that its unfortunate to see the reflection but the passenger is clearly hiding what he is watching. The onlooker has deliberately shamed the passenger. The reflections aren't always permanent and will flip in and out as the light in the window changes.

People will look for the reflection when someone is hiding their screen. I'd still say it is more impolite and ill mannered to look at what others are doing.

In the situation you posted I think I'd have given the passenger a nudge and pointed at the window. I also understand that its impolite to comment and good manners are to ignore. We should be more mindful of what our own behaviour is than concern ourselves with what others are doing. As a Driver; I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...

Totally agree, I wouldn't like somebody to do it to me, so I don't do it to other people. My only issue is with people who broadcast their conversations or whatever they're watching or listening to at a volume that is far too loud and other people can't help but hear it.

When I've been watching a DVD or writing trip reports on long train journeys I've caught other passengers looking at my laptop screen, which was really annoying to say the least. I've put a stop to that by buying a privacy filter from Staples, it was expensive but it stops nosy people sitting next to or behind me trying to see what I'm watching.

With regards to adult material, I don't think a train or any other public place is an appropriate place to be watching it.

The fact it was posted on Twitter was deliberate, but it could just as easily have been a child/granny/easily embarrassed person sitting there instead. The point is that in some cases you can see/hear what people are watching/listening to even if you don't want to.

The problem with a train carriage is the confined space. You always talk at a level in which you can hear yourself talk; hence shouting when your cans are in. The train carriage has multiple conversations so you have people always talking slightly louder than the next person. Ergo; the volume level rises.

With regards to adult material, I don't think a train or any other public place is an appropriate place to be watching it.

Why ? Where is an "appropriate place" Fifty Shades, as already been mentioned, is "adult fiction" generally it's light porn. Walking through a train carriage full of people reading that can't really be considered in appropriate but its "adult" material.

Social standards are lowering changing so what was socially unacceptable many years ago is pretty much the norm now. What the future holds I have no idea but I'm sure I will look back in many years and think watching porn on a train was nothing compared to full blown VR + attachment + Robo companion whilst commuting.

I was on a coach from Santa Cruz De La Sierra to Buenos Aires and the driver decided to make Full Metal Jacket the "In flight movie" for part of the 40 odd hour coach journey. This was like the Bolivian equivalent of National Express (But much nicer) so there were loads of kids on board (Although not in Cama Class where we were). No sure what the kids made of it, it was like 3 in the afternoon.

Anyway, porn on trains, don't have the sound cranked up, aren't showing it to kids and don't ask the girl sat next to you "Can you do that" I don't see the problem. Discretion is the name of the game like for many things.

I don't have a problem with that because that's what happens, it's when people just blatantly shout down the phone for no reason to broadcast their very uninteresting social life to everybody else on the train or play their music/videos far too loudly.

I personally think it's inappropriate to watch/read adult material in public because it's well, inappropriate, and in my opinion it should be watched/read in your own personal space at home (in privacy) rather than on a train/bus etc.
