Platform tickets at gated stations?

Can't find any info on websites, so I'll ask the experts!

I know you can meet/leave someone outside the station, but if you are with someone elderly who needs a little bit of help organising the correct platform and the station is gated/ticket collectors (eg Bolton, Oxford Rd) we used to be able to buy a platform ticket to cover it.

Are those still available, can they be obtained from the machines if there's a queue, or would showing a diasbled badge + explanation to staff suffice?

Basically Dad has to travel from Bolton to Man Ox Rd and I'll leave him and a relative collect him at the other end (and vice-versa).

At busier stations I believe you can go to the ticket office and purchase a platform ticket - they usually cost 10p. I have purchased several, one at eastbourne and one at Brighton. However they dont always seem to work through the ticket gates, so you have to speak to the gateline assistant. Often when I am spotting or photting I buy the cheapest travel ticket I can find.

I believe they are valid for 60 minutes after purchase

I'll try that, will need to explain I'm collecting to. Might be more difficult for the relative at busy Oxy Road though?

If you are meeting someone off the train, and helping them on I doubt the gateline will have any objections to letting you through. In my experience you'll have more trouble persuading the booking office to issue you a platform ticket.

Surely if they can't make a ticket, a piece of paper giving permission ??

The potential problem is that not all stations issue platform tickets. Some require people to sign in if staying for an extended period of time, and others just wave you through for any legitimate reason. For that reason, not all clerks are familiar with platform tickets.

The last time I had one issued was at Stratford International, and that was way back in 2012 I think.
