Poll: Views on tattoos

Apart from anything else, my pain threshold doesn't go that far! lol

I didn't think my pain threshold was overly great, but I managed to cope fine for an hour.

Mention of pain thresholds would definitely be enough to put me off if I was considering having one!

Er... isn't this one of the many Old Testament stipulations which are, nowadays, binding on Orthodox Jews; but which -- under the "new deal" consequent on Christ's death and resurrection -- don't apply to Christians?

Erm...Probably? Depends on who you speak to. Some Christians would argue it's still in effect, and others would argue it's not. Much like the 'traditional' interpretation of Leviticus 18:22, which many scholars argue has been taken out of context and mistranslated. But that's a whole other debate for a different kind of thread, and I could quite easily go on a lengthy rant about that kind of thing.

By that reasoning, I assume you also don't eat pork or shrimp, cut the sides of your beard (or, indeed, shave!), or work on a Sunday?

In the 70's in my home town it used to be only Sailors and Ladies of the night who had em, something changed and now more people seem to have them than not.

Personally I would have liked one, but on medical advice didn't - I've got unusual blood.

I agree. I have a minimalist kangaroo on my right leg, which looks kinda Picasso style if you get what I mean.

I got the first of my several tattoos 25 years ago.

I don't plan on getting any more, but I have one which is a work in progress.

How it gets finished depends on if my daughter has any more children or not.

On the other side of the equation: I went to uni with someone who was ex navy and at least twice as old as we were. He was covered in really bad tattoos but is now a top level barrister. i think the key is to keep them in places where they wont be seen.

My rule for myself is
1) Discrete place
2) Minimalist/small
3) Only get it if it has sentimental meaning

Thank you. It's a deeply personal tattoo as one can imagine. I wanted something subtle, but also distinctive and impactful. This was the design that inspired my final choice:

One of our very retired family friends became teetotal after a somewhat boozy night out when he was a young soldier resulted in his wife querying why he now had a foxes tail tattooed on his backside. He still can't remember a thing about it.
