Hi all,

I was directed to your site by Mr. Wanderer, took the plunge and decided to join. I live twenty miles north of Dublin on the Dublin to Belfast mainline which is separated from my house by a playing pitch and a road. I'm 25 years old and currently doing my PhD in History in Dublin.

I have two websites. The first one is Rail Scene Ireland. This contains my digital Irish shots from 2007 to present.

My other site is Rail Scan Ireland. This contains scans of pictures taken by my father, brother and myself and covers 1970s to 2004.

I look forward to exploring the forum a bit more later but to start of with here are some shots I took today in Drogheda of a steam excursion hauled by locomotive 186.

Enjoy!

Fantastic pictures, Csalem! And welcome to the forums.

Between your photos and Thewanderer's, you're tempting me over to Ireland! YOu seem to have a decent set of trains over there and I'd quite like to experience them at some point.

Yes, I've been and they are quite comfortable. The older DARTs felt quite slow though.

Ooh, I like Balbriggan. Always a good place to bail and wander along the beach, bellow at the seals in the harbour between doing push-pull 121s or waiting for the 141s on the Mosney to come back again...happy times!

Thanks everyone. The best thing about living in Balbriggan is that every two hours or so I get to hear 071s roaring through. There is one that passes through most nights at 19:30 on a freight and I can often here it on the approach for a good five to ten minutes.

Hi all,
Did a little round Ireland trip today. Popped down to Limerick this morning. I then had to get a bus to Waterford as the line was shut and then got the train back from Waterford. Highlights: 22038 on test as it passes through Limerick Junction, three different Baby GMs appear, an entire orange train in Waterford and some early morning shots in Heuston.

Limerick always throws up some through the window shots and on offer I have 142, 2751, Rotems on the Direct Curve at Limerick Junction and 075 on a track train in Clonmel.

Pictures start at the bottom of the page below and continue on.

Enjoy!

P.S. On a slightly sombre note, if IE continue with their storage and withdrawl of Mk 3 carriages then I believe today was my last long distance train journey on an Irish Mark 3 set.

Hi all,

Did my monthly trip to Kildare today and with a bit of sadness I can safely say it is also my last trip to Kildare for 2008 unless something extraordinary happens. So what's on offer? Well I expected today to be a bit average as the Norfolk was not running and neither the cement nor Limerick wheel train passed through. But as usual Kildare paid off. Intercity 222 was on an engineers train. 146 passed through with 080. 22006 worked the 11:30 Heuston to Waterford, a first I believe. Also included is a shot of Tamper 741 on the new track as part of the Kildare route project, a six coach Rotem on the morning departure from Galway, coaches, wagons and DART 8122 in service. It was the last one to go to Germany for refurb.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
Some pictures taken today in Drogheda are now uploaded to the page below. They show three 071s and a number of DMUs, including a few sneaky shots of the Depot interior taken from a bridge.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
A bit of a heritage update today. This morning the preserved set of the RPSI was in Connolly after completing its weekend Santa Steam specials. Intercity 227 came over to bring the set back to Inchicore. Shots of the train, including the immaculately restored 1142, in Connolly and passing through Drumcondra are now uploaded to the site, along with shots of DMUs, EMUs (including the Alstom Dart) and 084 and 171 in Connolly, and DMUs in Drumcondra. Pictures start at the bottom of the page below and continue on.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
Popped down to Cork yesterday on a bit of a research trip and took a few shots while their. Highlights include 147&162 on the rail train for Midleton in Cork Station and the usual mix of DMUs and 201s on the Mark 4 sets. Thought I managed to beat the odds and not see it but no, the 27/2600 combi-set does appear. I also managed to get a shot a two coach 2600 coming around the outside loop in Cork.

On a slightly odd but happy note, yesterday was the first time I photographed 162 since I went digital four years ago. I even forgot it still existed.

Pictures start at the bottom of the page below and continue on.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
December was meant to be a restful month for me but the Fates have decreed otherwise. Today was the last day of the timber train from Sligo. This meant I was up at 05:30 to travel west to capture this occasion for posterity. The weather was dreadful but this worked in my favour to a small degree as it meant the timber had to brought up in two parts from Sligo Quay was recombined within the station. Pictures are up showing it ascending from the Quay and departing from Sligo, loco 082 in charge, which came very close to breaking the sound barrier!

Pictures start on this page:

Except for this one, which sneaked onto the previous page:

Hi all,
I've uploaded some pictures taken in Balbriggan yesterday showing 111 and the Gatwicks filling in for an Enterprise set and a few DMUs, including one passing throigh going to Drogheda with Sligo on the destination.

http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1286313_169.html

Also a shot of 228 outside Connolly shed yesterday morning, after it worked an Enterprise service on Wednesday:

And 2805 at the rear of the 09:55 from Dundalk in Connolly.

Yesterday was a day for oddities!

Enjoy!

Hi Csalem, it's late I know but welcome to the forum (I'm 43019 on the other forum).

Some nice photos in there altogether, fair play. Just wondering, but do you know what the 071 class of locos do these days (if anything)? I've recently gotten a desire to go to Ireland for a bit of a cranking trip and I've heard the 071s are absolutely dreadful. I understand they're on borrowed time, but I wonder if I'm too late...Any help appreciated (via PM if you wish).

Sorry I didn't see your post here, but luckily I got you on the other board.

Just a quick update from today. Took some shots at the old junction on the Navan line were the tracks diverged to the Tara Mine and Kingscourt. The latter line has now been disconected in places while the former is getting new rail. Pictures include new road bridges being built as part of the M3 works, including one over the remains of the Kingscourt route.
Three shots also included of the former station at Kells which is now a bus garage. Architecturally it is very similar to my local station of Balbriggan, both part of the former GNRI.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and didn't over-indulge too much! I did this last year and it seemed quite popular so I decided to do it again this year. Last year took me three days and I had to choose from 1000 shots. This year took three months to put it all together and had to choose from over 3,000 shots. But it is now ready and I am happy to present:

2008...A Year in Review

The collection shows how I experienced the railway scene in Ireland during 2008. The pictures include some notable events, such as the take-over of the Rotems, DARTs in Drogheda and Balbriggan, Mark 3s in storage as well as some of my favourite shots taken through-out the year, such as the meeting of 201 and 071 in Kildare, the Tara on Alexandra Road and the RPSI specials to mark the 50 years of the end of the GNRI.

I hope you enjoy these 150 shots that tell the Rail Scene Ireland story of 2008. Come 2009 the website will be undergoing a few changes.

http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1557064.html

Finally, if that was not enough for you, I can also direct you to the Balbriggan Through the Years collection which shows the trains that passed through Balbriggan this year. They include DARTs, Mark 3s going into store, NIR trains on GAA specials, Enterprise replacements and train trips, a steam train, the Taras and the Cements and the usual mix of DMUs and Enterprises.

They start in the snow and frost at the bottom of this page and continue on...

After the weekend's excitement it's back to business as usual, and a slight overhaul to Rail Scene Ireland. I have dropped the 'Latest Pictures' Collection and from now on all shots will go into a monthly collection and remain there. All shoots from 2006-2008 will stay in the class specific collection.

So to start off January we have some shots from Connolly, Balbriggan and Luas in Abbey Street. Highlights include two 071s, a four piece LHB DART in service and Luas 3005 which has now lost its Vodafone ad.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
Just a few shots taken in Balbriggan today in between studying. Highlights include 084 and 085 on the Tara trains (and based on news reports who knows how long it may last?), Intercity 228 making a return to the Enterprise, and 2804, just cos.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
I had a small trip out to Malahide and Rush & Lusk today. Pictures from both train stations and of trains crossing the causeway at Malahide Estuary. Highlights include all three Enterprise sets, 085 on the Tara, a few DARTs, 29000s, the eight piece 2600 set and surprisingly for the Northern line, two 2800 sets!

Enjoy!

Hi all,
Did my first long distance travel today, completing the Dublin-Waterford-Limerick Junction-Dublin loop. Didn't expect much from Waterford which was a bit unfair as things turned out. Got three 071s down there: 084 on the timber, 082 on the Norfolk and 081 on a ballast which passed through the station to go onto the South Wexford line. Furthermore, Waterford also provided the two stored Mark 3 rakes (which may or may not be going to DB Regio/Chiltern, depending on if you believe internet rumours or not) as well as 222 with a Mark 3 push/pull.
Limerick Junction provides 075 and 077, while I got a quick shot of the three Mark 3s in Thurles, 228 on a Mark 3 rake in Carlow and 212 and Mark 3s in Heuston.
If that is not enough, Rotems and 2700s appear, as do some general shots.

Pictures start near bottom of this page and continue on:

Some nice shots. I've had many adventures on railways in Ireland down the years. Best was a cab ride from Belfast to Dublin and back in 1986, in a 111 class GM. What a beast! On the way back there was a riot going on in Lurgan and the driver turned off the headlights to avoid advertising our approach too much, then cranked up the speed to get through as fast as possible. At the final approach he told me and my mate to get down, so we all crouched below windscreen level as the bricks and God knows what else clattered against the loco, breaking a window in the process. All rather exhilerating for a young lad from York!

I think things are slightly better than that nowadays! There was a part of Dublin when I was growing up where we were always told to sit back from the windows as we passed through in case a stone came through the window. As I said, thankfully those days seem to be behind us.:D

Some pictures now uploaded from today showing the Luas works and lunchtime at Connolly with 227 on the Enterprise service.
Enjoy!

Howth Junction and round there? I recall that Kilbarrack is the only railway station on whose platform I have ever seen a smackhead shooting up in broad daylight. Nice view from a passing Enterprise I must say!

On the very day of our cab ride, we had 8 hours in Dublin to kill and we got some day ticket that allowed travel on the DART, but also south to Greystones (on the last knackered old push-pull set converted from old DMU stock: 121 class traction), north to Balbriggan and west to Maynooth. On this last line we were pelted with bricks in both directions around Cabra or Drumcondra or somewhere by the same bored youths who appeared to be idling on the running lines simply waiting for trains to chuck stuff at. I was hugely impressed by the nonchalent efficiency with which staff at Connolly station went to a sort of big cupboard, extracted a replacement window for the coach concerned and fitted it there and then. By their demeanour it looked like this was a regular occurence! How Dublin has changed!

Where are they extending the LUAS to BTW?

And what does LUAS stand for?

Interesting post there 4SRKT.

Funny you should mention Connolly and changing windows because last night at the Irish Railway Records Society club meeting a friend was telling me he witnessed CME staff changing a window on an old wooden bodied coach in 90 seconds on platform 7!

Modern stock now needs 24 hours for the bonding to set in!
