Out of curiosity on units where emergency doesn't bring any extra brake force does using emergency dump the brake any quicker than the highest "normal" brake application?

I believe it simply shorts the braking circuits and ensures nothing can interfere electrically with the brake demand.

No.

All it does is break Train Wire 4 (other drivers here will know it as a different wire number, but the brake continuity wire) which breaks brake continuity and forces the train to come to a stand before anything else can be done.
