Then if you add in the numbers who came in via Victoria and Oxford Road - plus the Metrolink services ....and the buses....and of course cars....

Network Rail recorded 186,000 people passing through Piccadilly on Saturday. It only see 100,000 on a weekday.

Go on then, I'll bite, how did they "record" numbers? The obvious answers are either a)they had contract counters in place, so expected crowding and should have tipped off others and had plans in place, b) all rolling stock had passenger counts have been examined already, c) they have wildly guessed...

We have already reviewed Saturdays loadings (TOC investment so all stock has passenger count data at +2 days) and spot strengthened one further service for the rest of the month and extended contract staff on barriers to cater - TOC expense - why not Northern/Net Rail?

This coming Saturday I'm gonna try it out for myself. Should be leaving Urmston 5-ish just in time to get to Manchester to join the (a) Football crowd (b) Shoppers (c) Party-goers and (d) Workers for a pleasant journey home by train.

Basically, I'll take a well-filled wallet, dive into a pub anywhere near Oxford Road and just let the chaos swim around me. Then get a night-bus back to Bolton around 2am. (!!??)

I'll be the one carrying two hockey sticks and a bag!! TBH I couldn't have picked a worse day for my team to play in Urmston AND have my car off-road having it's service MOT! But, no hurry to get home, might just enjoy sitting in the bar @ Piccadilly watching all the chaos below - and it might all be as smooth as Caffrey's used to be :D

Happy days!! Oh, -4c overnight this weekend!!

Good natured chaos though !! When I was out with the Network Rail lot, one of the girls with us fell over on the Tram Line and got her nose stuck in the track.

We had to push her all the way to Victoria Station to get her out !! :D:D

According to Network Rail, they have recently installed Footfall counters similar to the ones on trains. So it a reasonable guess on numbers

Just scrolling back through Northern's Twitter feed (oh the poor souls having to read the rants) and saw this dated November the 26th:

"If you are getting in the festive spirit & visiting the Christmas markets why not leave the car behind & go by train? http://northernrail.org "

I'm not going to reply but I think they've got their answer now!

They have been asked why they put that when they haven't got capacity and the tweeters responded with our managers instructed us to.

They know full well it was a stupid idea.

Not necessarily. Northern will have taken a lot of additional revenue on Saturday with only very minimal increased operating costs so the managers will be rubbing their hands at how big their bonus is going to be.

As long as revenue checks were being performed as they wont have sold many tickets on board.

And assuming cap and collar arrangements are still in place , so will the taxpayer.

Of course the average fare paid by passengers ( assuming they did actually pay one ) is still a lot lower than most of the country....so I m not sure a bonus fest is applicable...

Given that Man Utd are also at home on Sat Dec 7th (v Newcastle Utd, large travelling support) and West Ham on Sat Dec 21st , with usual crowds of 75000 at Old Trafford are expected . Given the extra attractions of the popular Christmas Markets plus pantomimes ( yes Man City are at home on Sat Dec 14th !) and concerts at Bridgewater Hall, plus expected average weather for Dec, no doubt more overcrowding on the rail network can be expected !

Man Utd's fans will arrive using various transport methods. The point is, they'll be well practised and each will know their own unique way to the ground. They'll also have their routines and filter off into the night at their own speeds.

This was a one-off event and from a sport that is dominated by a few regional areas. It was always going to take huge numbers from very specific services.

I went to the semi finals at Wembley where 69,000 were in attendance. No problems with transport at all.

You obviously weren't on my tube from Kings Cross to Wembley Park. It was fine until Baker Street and then I couldn't breathe for the next fifteen minutes.
