Why is it that the vast majority of Glasgow-Gourock trains were cancelled today?

Also 156s being sent to Ayr according to RTT

I didn’t think any Ayr crew signed 156’s or any 156 drivers signed the line up via the Ayrshire coast! Are 156’s even cleared for that route anymore?

Could be an RTT error, wouldn’t be the only one. There’s a 20 coach Pendolino arriving in central at 18:00 allegedly!

The Ayrshire lines have been pretty much kaput all day since 2K62 from Ayr to Glasgow broke down near Howwood during the morning peak.

I’d imagine there may be problems with the overhead lines as a result of the train breaking down plus the freezing cold weather.

It's apparently problems with frozen brake valves on the 380s, serious enough to warrant the entire fleet being withdrawn for the rest of the day.

Would explain why there was also cancellations on the Neilston services too, plus everything at the same time seemed to be terminated early.

There was also a signalling fault at Cathcart.

Plus, on the Eastern side of things, an OLE issue at Haymarket.

An unfortunate day of several incidents in very awkward places.

Some passengers online reported that they were stuck on the broken train near Howwood for 2+ hours without heat as well. I guess it's a blessing in disguise that there's strike action tomorrow if the entire Class 380 units are still withdrawn.

In addition to the broken down train: overhead wire problems at Haymarket this morning apparently due to icicles, a points failure at Arbroath, and signalling problems between Aberdeen and Inverurie for most of the day.

It’s all been a bit messy

Also a pigeon getting incinerated in the Waverley area and tripping the overheads all the way to Millerhill.

Ayr drivers sign 156s and drive them everyday. 156s are cleared for ecs and pass service on the Ayr - Glasgow line. Ayr conductors also sign the route.

Limited 4car 156 services running this evening between Glasgow Central and Ayr.

This possibly explains two car working on East Kilbride.

Correct. Units were stepped up from EK services to allow 4cars to run to Ayr from about 1600 onwards. Some services to Barrhead, East Kilbride and Kilmarnock were cancelled due to lack of units and guards. Only Ayr guards sign the main line to Ayr so they were pulled from other services to work the 4cars to Ayr.

A 156 doing calls at the likes of Johnstone and Dalry must be a first too?
No, 156s have worked in lieu of an electric unit on the Ayr - Glasgow services quite a few times over the years. Been a few years since it last happened though.

When electrics first started on Ayrshire routes the Saturday 2330 Glasgow Central to Ayr use to be booked a 2 car Class 156, which was used to position the unit for the Sunday service.

That’s pretty bad. 380s are decent units for what they do, but new stock repeatedly being unable to cope with cold weather conditions isn’t great. Looking slightly further back, class 170s and class 334s performed abysmally during cold winters just over a decade ago.

I recall one set operating an Ayr service within the last two years.

That must've been jam packed!

So incredibly it looks like the good old Class 156 survived the cold weather today given the reports of the disruption on here :) !

Any updates if the 380 issued have been rectified and if they'll be out for the next day of service on the Sunday?

I am fairly certain there is still a regular 156 ECS move from Ayr to Glasgow Central via Paisley, and then possibly onto Corkerhill.
IIRC it is scheduled non-stop but has similar timings to a semi-fast 380.

they're struggling on, but suffering with the cold weather aswell. Frozen doors, frozen door open buttons and main brake air systems have caused a few failures over the last few days on 156s.

Any updates if the 380 issued have been rectified and if they'll be out for the next day of service on the Sunday?
No updates so far and in fact there's not even been anything mentioned by the bosses to staff on the matter officially yet!

Yeah, this still runs. Ayr driver works it as far as Glasgow Central.

Ominous silence about the problem, are they keeping it a secret?

Will I be able to get a train from Largs on Sunday? Who knows...

They still have 380 sets stabling at Glasgow Central which worries me. However the weather is meant to get better next week so we can only hope they repair.

Expect to see them out of commission for Xmas and New Year period at least. Initial chat is this isn’t a quick fix.

Can’t even be moved as ECS as the moment.

That's unfortunate; more Largs and Ardrossan cancellations, Gourock/Wemyss Bay on reduced services with 320s and limited servive of 156s to Ayr then?

Why not bring the 385s back to the Cathcart Circle/Newton/Gourock/Wemyss Bay then? Short-form some Shotts and Lanark services to provide the stock.

The 318/320 can also supplement the 385s on those services as long as the service runs with highest possible frequency without 380s being available.

Least they have the option of the 5 stood down 320/4 units they can use and I suspect with the restricted timetable on Edi/GQS and Milngavie to Edinburgh between 385 being used and 334 operating some Argyle line services more 318/320 can operate out of Central.
However I believe quiet a number of 318/320 failures in the last few days

Tho doesnt solve Ayrshire issues with no 380 unless 385 are cleared and Corkerhill drivers can operate them
