Was thinking the same like, see how the new year kicks off.

Yeah, just need to see how it pans out. Hopefully it will be all good.

I've already lost a travel industry job due to the pandemic and am currently working in something I have absolutely no desire to be in. Yes it's a secure job, but barely sustainable wages wise, so I'm personally willing to take the risk and grab the rail opportunity with both hands. If it doesn't work out I'd have lost a job i won't miss, if it does then I'd have gained a great new career.

Each person needs to just make their own mind up based on their circumstances. I'd not have left my previous job to go to rail had it not been for covid, even though rail seems to offer a much higher salary.

Sorry to hear you lost your previous job, everybody’s situation will be different. Luckily I have a job I enjoy within the railway at the moment but becoming a train driver is an aspiration I have. I’d imagine internal applicants have the benefit of a fall back to their previous role? Short term I have to put my family first. Each individual will have to weigh the risks themselves.

Hey there everybody,
Has anyone who passed the psychometric on February down at atrium court heard anything about manager interviews or had any correspondence from HR?
Cheers

Nah heard nothing, but understandable in current climate. But remaining confident that we may still hear something. Now that there is new starts they will surely want to move more people along the different stages of the pool so if they do need more drivers they are in a better position. Frustrating though to hear they are doing internal interviews but leaving us waiting

Thank you, it was in Aviation, so no chance of that coming back any time soon, although now I'm out of that industry I must say I only really miss the benefits (as a frequent traveler the standby flights made up for the lower salary) and not the actual job itself. I'm the weeks before I was made redundant it was becoming an absolute nightmare to keep up with the changing entry rules and regulations as countries closed their doors. I actually applied for this job on the Sleeper within days of being let go and didn't hear anything back for months, I'd more or less forgotten all about my application as luckily I jumped into another job very early on in the lockdown.

That said, I don't want to take this thread off its main topic as I'm not even going to be a scotrail driver! I just use this thread to gain a rough idea of when I might start. It's good to see some December start dates for you driver trainees, it might mean my start date is around a similar time. I've got my medical out the way too.

Best of luck to you all.
Just out of curiosity, when were the trainee driver roles advertised for the sleeper? I'm assuming it was through Serco you applied?

I couldn't find a thread about anything recruitment related, so this was the closest thing.

I applied for Train manager, not driver. I couldn't find a thread about anything sleeper recruitment related, so this was the closest thing as I'm told we will be reliant upon Scotrail training facilities.

Pretty sure locos and the driver's are all provided by GBRF a freight company (FOC)

Not sure if the drivers are dedicated to sleeper work or also do other freight work too.

Yeah, just need to see how it pans out. Hopefully it will be all good.

Internal applicants continue to work in their current role until their training starts for new role. If they are not successful in their application, they just carry on doing what they were. (They don't 'fall back')

If they join a new role and start training, they then cease their previous role which for most people is fine. If someone fails their training and doesn't qualify then there is generally NO automatic right to return to their previous role which may have been filled by someone else already. If there is a vacancy , then they can apply for it but there is no guarantee they will get it, all depends on a variety of things.

Maybe ‘fall back’ was the wrong term to use and it wasn’t meant as slight!

Scotrail will train you for shunting the sleeper. Some great guys do the shunting course. Usually Scott Denniston or Pat McQuade. I shunted the sleeper up until July of this year when the contract was given to GBRf.

I'm an internal applicatant currently waiting on drivers course. Although I am fairly low on the priority list as we are not short staffed for services. Finished training my replacement in February. I will be training his replacement this month so hopefully all will be well for sometime in 2021. Thankfully I have a DI and DTM happy to proceed when we get the go ahead. Got the job in August last year.

Hi everyone, new member on here.
Im currently a trainee in the North Clyde area and wandering have any other trainees heard anything at all? I thought when the union had agreed with management, it was all in place to start getting us funnelled back in using bubbles, had training needs analysis calls etc, but its all gone quiet again so has anyone experienced or trainee heard anything?

We’re currently doing traction training, two of us to one trainer. Training trains have been cancelled though.

No prospect of driving instructors in the foreseeable for us according to our DTM.

I had just finished traction and was out with a DI when this all happened, no sign of when DIs may be willing to start taking drivers out again? What have yous been told will happen after traction? Are you North Clyde also?

A large amount of DI's have chucked it with no intention of taking it back on. Its going to be a very long process to get current trainees through the training program.

No word on DIs officially to us.

No communication re post traction, assumption is back home for some considerable time.

South Clyde for us (if they call it that)

I understand that mate I just hope they dont start paying us off due to no DI willing to train us.

That's my worry. Sitting at home doing nothing wondering if I will ever get back!! Cannot see myself being back until mid next year as it currently stands.

My depot currently has 14 trainees and down to 5 DI's.

What area are you in?
Atleast thats promising to an extent as far as I know there is 4 DIs to approx 65 trainees

Not sure what's happening elsewhere but here is what's going on at my depot:

No DIs have resigned their posts.
Each DI has ONE trainee allocated.
They have formed a bubble and do not mix with anyone else ie:

They agree a time and place to meet for the first duty of the day. That may not be the booking on point but a depot. They book on remotely by phone from that point.
They complete the first part of the duty together, wearing masks etc as required.
They then take their PNB together, in a room or office away from everyone else.
Temperature checks are undertaken at a suitable opportunity.
They're not permitted to enter a bothy or use vending machines etc.
They are not permitted to travel "pass"
They complete the shift and book off wherever they finish.

It's working well. Not sure why there's an issue elsewhere, particularly the North Clyde.
