One of those must have been going to Newcastle, as there was the Newcastle-Manchester Red Bank sidings newspaper vans returning empties which plodded back up through the Calder Valley.

IIRC it left Newcastle about 1300, often loaded to 20 or more vans and frequently double-headed. I used to see it through Copley about 1630, on my way home from school, and no - George Stephenson's "Rocket" was not usually one of the locos! :D :D

I didn't phrase that very well. I meant a fast service to the Airport from South Hylton, only calling at Monument along the way. :p

I can't see many people using that, however a fast Sunderland to Airport limited stop service might be useful but I doubt it would be practicle

Gone indeed are the days that platform 11 at Manchester Victoria was the main departure point for the Newspaper trains that were ran late in the evenings.

Pity im too young to remember all of that traffic :(

Joking aside, there's no point in any "fast" service when the train infront is only a few minutes ahead, meaning it'd be caught up in no time.

I'm surprised the Sunderland services don't go to the Airport though, I'd have thought there was more market for such a service than a South Shields - Airport service?

If it were possible to get the trains into Manors East and "upstairs" at Central, then it might be possible. However, they would need to widen the viaducts to do this. Possible, but costly.

maybe the metro could start portion working to serve both The Airport and North Tyneside loop from Sunderland? It could be a bit too complicated for the local Charvers mind!

also if some use could be made of the Leamside we could have a Sunderland and Washington loop line...

The return of the Southport to Preston coastal line .
SOUTHPORT
HESKETH PARK
CHURCHTOWN
CROSSENS
BANKS
HUNDRED END
HESKETH BANK
HOOLE
LONGTON BRIDGE
NEW LONGTON AND HUTTON
PRESTON

They even closed the ELECTRIC branch from Southport to Crossens

Praise be to that. My mate lives in Tarleton and wishes he could just hop on a train to Preston rather than the Stagecoach mystery tour around half of suburban Lancashire.

A "dream" - which can never be realised - would be some limited reopening, but of course, ''progress'' means there's no chance in High Heaven of an inch of track ever appearing along the route. An awful historic destruction, one which has torn out real chances for local transport interchanges and as a consequence economic health has been compromised for generations too.

A nice new bridge over the River Douglas would be rather essential as part of the infrastructural requirements.

I am glad that you mentioned the bus service. Would this be the number 2 service from Preston to Southport that passes the entrance to the West Lancashire Light Railway, near to the new supermarket?

Preston to Southport via a curve at Burscough would be a good start, then extend Ormskirk to Rufford as third rail and make that the interchange for Liverpool trains.

Otherwise:

Bedford then all stations (plus some new ones) to Leicester, Loughborough, East Midlands Parkway, Toton (new), Alfreton, Chesterfield, Manchester (possibly Stockport if a path can be found via Stockport).

Derby - Stoke - Manchester as an extension of Derby to Stoke running via the Airport. (Could terminate at the airport as transfer there is pretty easy)

There once was a service using the southern chord from Manchester Airport to the Midlands. What was the reason for its withdrawal and would these reasons still be valid today?

This southern facing chord is very much underused.

A nice new bridge over the River Douglas, what a shame it was another element lost to history

The bus is indeed the number 2, which meanders through Longton etc into Penwortham. It follows, without any sense of irony, the train line for many parts of its route...

It was a Central trains service to Skegness, I guess it just got scaled back when Central was split. Would still have come entirely under the remit of EMT though.

A Birmingham - Crewe - Manchester Airport would also be interesting, maybe taking some of the stops from the current XC offerings to lighten their load a little.

Newcastle is a cold station when you need to kip there having missed the 22:43! I would have liked to get the old Manchester Airport train at C.0200 but that dersont run anymore - bet it was a fun one to work on!

I used to work that train in the early 2000's and it was mainly used by drunks going back to Durham , in particular students. They'd try anything to avoid paying their fares as they had usually managed to dodge their fares on the outward journey but generally we would keep one door open and make them pay or show before they got on. I often used to haul the BTP out of their cosy warm office and make them do some work too.

Here's one I'd like to see during the summer: the Bournemouth XCs extended alternately
POOLE
WAREHAM
DORCHESTER SOUTH
WEYMOUTH
and
POOLE
WAREHAM
NORDEN PARKWAY (yes, I'd rename it like this)
CORFE CASTLE
SWANAGE

The Swanage railway is 3tp2h in the summer, so there's certainly demand.

I'd like to see the following:

1 TPH Nunthorpe - Newcastle Airport
calling Gypsy Lane, Marton, Middlesbrough, Thornaby, Stockton, Billingham, Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, Seaham, Sunderland, Heworth, Newcastle Central MetroCentre -> New line - Newcastle Airport

1 TPH Middlesbrough - Hexham/Carlisle
calling as now.

1 TPH Darlington - Hartlepool
calling Teesside Airport, Dinsdale, Allens West, Eaglescliffe, Stockton, Billingham, Seaton Carew & Hartlepool (BAY PLATFORM)

It got scaled back waaay before that!

It was split to Derby - Crewe and Nottingham - Skegness a few years before CT ended, and it was Crewe - Skeggy for 3 or so years before that IIRC

I'd love to see electrification of the North Downs Line and the restoration of direct services from Tonbridge to Guildford - it'd make my life much easier!!

There used to be a Hartlepool - Darlo service in BR days - I think it ran every 2 hours but I can't remember when it got the chop.
I doubt Grand Central would want it back as it would allow ppl from Hartlepool to change at Darlo for EC services to Kings Cross.

If they have a spare 73 in the area, some have been fitted for hauling Desiros. If they could extend the "Royal Wessex" commuter fasts - Poole portion anyway - to Swanage, then Purbeck could have its own London commuter service.

I'd like to see the Paddington-Worcester services extended to Droitwich Spa. There aren't many Worcester terminators but nonetheless any service is better than no service. It's hardly a gargantuan effort as it's only 5 extra miles :) I've even made a timetable for it! ;)

The reason I said XC is because Voyagers have been down to Swanage before. Although only the one once, I think, when it was brand new.

You deserve a medal for working that train . i used to use it a lot in 1997/1998 when it was the 0140. Mon Tue Weds it would be dead then on a thurs and friday I'd be the only sober person aboard (apart from the driver and guard lol)

I would like to see DIRECT services from Manchester to Dover and to Penzance.

That's a whole new kettle of fish, but I like the idea. There was a massive thread about Manchester services not so long ago. People were designing their layouts and posting them via Google Maps.
