George Bain (1881–1968), who was born in Scrabster, was an artist and art teacher who made an important and influential contribution to the revival of interest in Celtic and Insular art which began in the 19th century . In 1952 he moved to Codsall in Staffordshire, where he continued to work until his death in 1968.

Whereas Partick Thistle is named after the Scottish national plant, Shamrock Rovers is named after the Irish one. It is based in Tallaght near Dublin.
