As Nottingham is the home of John Harvey's Inspector Charlie Resnick, so is Edinburgh the base of Ian Rankin's John Rebus.

I'm not aware of a town called Galloway? Isn't it an area rather than a settlement?

Sorry ;)

I will have to go back to Dumfries, but to be fair to the new guy I will choose something that matches Bradford as well...

...which is that Newhaven also has eight letters in its name.

Are duplicate names permitted?
I was thinking about a drive from Buxton (Derbyshire), mainly along the A17 to Buxton (Norfolk)

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Are duplicate names permitted?

Of course they are, when used in creative comparisons....:D

Alverstoke in Hampshire was also a settlement where a "House of Industry" was once established.

St Ives (the one not on the coast) is also within close proximity of a certain form of transport that is often, and usually justifiably, criticised on this forum.

Apparently its name comes from a chap named Saint Ivo

Dorking also appears at first glance to be a verb but actually refers to a clan that lived in the area.

Newhaven is another small town that has three railway stations.

OK, so one of them is never actually used, but it is still technically open...
