Well you just can't please some people.

Too many locos at a diesel gala?
And not that long ago there were no galas at all. Where’s the support for SVR for their coffers? Seems to have evaporated. Fickle enthusiasts as always. I’ll be there whatever runs on the day I go.

Being fussy is just the way it's got to be at the moment. I was all keen to go, and further delay spending money on other things that I actually need, as the lineup was looking great. The Sunday timetable is just not what I was expecting, the bits I wanted to go for aren't happening so it's not worth me spending the money.

Overall I'd be looking at spending £65 on the day's SVR and mainline fares, plus food and drink. Probably more by the time I've been into the shop on one or more of the stations. That money can be used more wisely on buying new footwear, or it can fund the checkup and new parts on my road cycle, or be put towards getting my touring cycle back on the road.

With such important things for me to spend my money on, then to change that and go to the SVR I needed the HST to run to Bridgnorth, and I would have needed the 56 and 88 as the bare minimum on top of that. Everything else would be a bonus, but it's not working out that way so I will use my money on things I actually need to spend it on!

Call me fickle if you will, but I am absolutely certain I am not the only one making such a decision. Especially with summer holiday season coming up!

How is 82045 progressing, it looks fairly complete however there hasn't been an official SVR video about it for 6 months?

Spot on - This thread sums up spotters neatly. Always complaining and always suffering from short arms!

if you are not happy with the roster don't go. I might go on 2 days though as there are several interesting locos and HST's about. A shame about the 58 but I have had them in mainline service so you know it isnt all that ;)

Monthly updates on the 82045 Trust website.

Slowly but surely seems to be the best description. I'm sure there will be a video when they reach the next milestone.
Thanks for the link :)

According to the SVR website 50035 is running tomorrow, however on the PDF (just below on the SVR website) it's 33108! Does anybody know which is right?

Well I'll be there. I'm not too bothered about what's appearing and what isn't, it's just the experience of travelling in diesel-hauled trains like in my younger days which appeals to me, not to mention visiting Bridgnorth with its markets, alehouses and chipshop which does battered chips. I've booked Friday off work so I can enjoy both Friday and Saturday, why not, it's local! :)

Looking at going on two days.
Not planning the day just winging it.
A few required locos namely the 47 & 31270
Surprised only one Vac is working namely 50035
Presumably 007 & 049 will be under maintenance as they’ve been busy out & about the network.

Out of curiosity how much would it have cost the SVR to hire in all the visiting locos for the gala?
I know there will be favours & mates rates but surely that doesn’t stand for all the hire ins.

I understand the 58 failed it’s fitness to travel permit.

Could they not haul it in by road & run it or does the fitness to run permit run to private lines too?

Thought it was parked up at Leicester?
Is there no access there?
If it's failed an FTR for the mainline, there is presumably felt to be a reasonably high chance of failure, which the SVR is unlikely to want on a Gala day.

Also there are only so many Hauliers capable of moving a loco and they usually need reasonable lead times to enable the various planning activities around bridge heights and max weights that a loco move would entail.

I will be going to the diesel gala because the SVR needs our support.
Having said that, cant help feeling that the planners have gome for quantity over quality.
Timetabling the rarer visitors for one trip only and either at the same time or so late in the day is not the best in my opinion.
Struggling to see the point of hiring 57307, or engines like 20142, D8568 that appear with regularity elsewhee.
Surely a gala with so many guests, is an ideal opportunity to give regular performers from the home fleet a much needed rest.
Appreciate that others will dissagree.

Allegedly 60062 for the gala, it might look good in all the photos but given the fact its worked charters many times I can't see it adding much to the number visiting, now you would have thought one of the three running down their engine hours ready for a shaky future would have been the ones to ask for but they aren't as pretty I suspect

After many years photographing the line on always amazing line up galas both May and October ( loved the 50s at 50 gala ) - your able to see and photograph everything throughout the day and drive ahead of a working to photograph it twice on the same working (sometimes) - if the weather is in favour this can be amazing!

Due to the lost of my car I’m travelling to Kidderminster from Plymouth via the mainline ( booked in advance so it’s mega cheap - most probably cheaper than filling the car up) ( pathed as a castle class to Bristol ) - hopefully all goes to plan with the current non strike situation.

I have planned to pay and bash for two to three full days and pay on the day - this is £62 otd for two days or £86.50 otd for three days.

I know these events are not cheap to stage - prices are never announced but I know all these locomotives don’t come for free.

But/
With the current offer of buy one get one free on normal running days when there is two return trips a day diesel hauled - ( timetable B) it’s currently £32 on the day (or £16 a day for two days if you take up the free return rover) - and looking at this gala timetable I’m only gaining one extra return trip a day to Highley really.
Now a few days before the event I’m now looking at paying to bash maybe just one full day - guessing around £36 on the day? ( and I dont get my free return visit for this price xD )

My hopes “bashing” for this weekend was DBSO leading with the push pull 47 tailing and the 47 leading with the DBSO tailing - a few class 50 ( website has this pluralised ) - the GWR HST and anything else a bonus. ( shame about the class 58 mind) but all in my mind these would work the full length of the line.

The timetable to bash the GWR HST is only between Kidderminster to Arley and looking at the website the on the day return for this is £14 for the hour return- which I guess is fine ( very close to my advanced ticket to Bristol) - but may consider this on the Thursday- ( unless prices increase cause of the gala status)

I’m staying in Birmingham as this was the most cheapest hotel I could find that’s close to a mainline station - ( still it’s a premier inn - how posh! ) but on the Sunday the first train doesn’t get to Kidderminster till 10:04 - typical!
I don’t get to Kidderminster till lunch time on the Thursday- so planning to stay on the platform Thursday to photograph and see what’s what.

Currently a single on the bus is two pounds which could get me to a half decent location but this looks limited on the Sunday too but there’s a taxi rank in front of the station so all not lost.

I have never free loaded on these events - always bought a souvenir cup ( unsure if this is available this year ) and lots of stuff on the stalls, shops at stations and paid to visit the depot ( which I’m sure was a couple quid before or donation than the ten pounds this year)

But with so many locomotives- departures shuttles and workings - it’s hard to justify the money as you miss so much and looking through the timetables it’s hard to plan to make value for money and not just bashing the home fleet which seems to be on the full line running.

For the same money I was set to pay for three days - I could go for 6 2x return trips diesel hauled bashing on the line with the current bogof offer.

The last main line train back to Birmingham on the Saturday is 23:05 but it would only take for a very slight delay with the Class 47 last return working to Kidderminster due back at 22:42 - that I’m definitely not keen on this idea.

( specially looking at what happened at swanage ending up with nearly a hour delay)

My current thinking is the SVR is losing £400 of my money which I was prepared to spend and I may just head to Crewe and go to a certain heritage centre there on one day on the weekend - but I’ll definitely be back and bash it when I got my car again and know I can get home.^_^

I know you can’t have too many locomotives attending - but I do agree there is far too much attending.

FYI : And to get home from Birmingham I’m going via London to Plymouth as this is a fraction of the price than to bash it direct via a XC Voyager - but I’m guessing one day even these be attending galas in years to come. ^_^

There was already a voyager at a gala, the WSR had one say 2002/3 time, along with 46035 and 47732, although I must stress I spent my time on the 46 honest guv.

For those in the area tomorrow (Wednesday), Kidderminster booking office will be open 9am-7pm for ticket collection if you want to do so early.

Strictly speaking only rover tickets are available at galas.

One reason for HST set not working north of Arley is the short platforms at Highley and Hampton Loade (there's a notice in the WTT that if HST does have to work north of Arley, it can't call at Arley or Hampton). The HST is only allowed P2/P3 at Bewdley.

I thought GWR HSTs were fitted with Selective Door Opening?

It’s only 2+4 and not 2+8 so surly it’s shorter than the shuttle ? No?

And if there is no “short return” tickets - they be losing even more money - surly some people must buy these regularly if they are local and require such tickets and services

Rumours circulating that 88001 will no longer be going to the gala for some reason, and 37422 being sent instead. No idea how true it is though.

From severnvalleyrailwayofficial :

To celebrate the coronation of King Charles the DTG have turned out D1015 'Western Champion' wearing the nameplate of classmate D1039 'Western King' on one side.
