"3" wireless dongle.

I think dongles are noted for their poor ping response.

I know my parets have enquired to perhaps join Virgin media when out talk talk contract finishes in a few months. Cant have it as we dont have cable on out side of the street yet the houses across the other side of the street do have cable.

My internet speed is very low today and the broadband connection keeps dropping/cutting off.

I had Virgin (cable) at my last gaff and it was marvellous, not available where I am now though and I am not sure if it ever will be (due to the investment costs and the current state of the economy).

Virgin isn't always brilliant though - speeds do vary considerably across the network. They generally are good, but my results were nowhere near as impressive as some others - despite probably paying around the same price.

I'm on BT not sure what linespeed we're supposed to be getting, but it isn't supposed to be lighting fast (probably 6mb/s I would guess) so the result isn't brilliant (still faster than it used to be though!)

Can I recommend trying Paris/Limerick for tests? These two were the best for me (significantly) oddly enough.

Just done two tests at home, one over Wifi and one with the cable plugged into the back of the router. Obviously not a scientific test, as half of London may have just gone offline! But I didn't realise using Wireless slowed it down so much...

Not bad for a £10/month DSL connection though!

Over Wifi:

Whilst Uni internet connections show incredible speeds you will notice when they are overloaded so the actual speed of general browsing isn't anything to shout about particularly in the evening when the whole halls of residence (as an example) is on facebook/iplayer/you name it.

My uni has a direct link with the BBC servers i'm told so downloading an hour long HD programme from iPlayer (~1gb) takes less than a minute.

Also downloads are dependant on the servers you are actually downloading from. On your average server I'd only experience download speeds of 500kbps ish. Meanwhile something off iPlayer may be 60mbps!

The latest Three dongle (E367) seems pretty good; here's a photo of me doing a speed test on a FCC train at Oakleigh Park last week;

That's twice what I get at home, and I really should leave the train one time and see what it's like outside of a metal box sitting under wires!

I hope Three/Huawei produce a HSPA+ enabled MiFi with the same chipset.

Who has internet from BT and found that your internet speed has dropped all of a sudden? Well mine has :(. I contacted BT and they said that they need to disable my connection for 3 days to enable the speeds to get higher again:/.
I should be getting 4 - 6 Mb/s, I am getting 0.50mb/s...

I am now retired and do not do as much on the internet these days, except for checking my accounts with British Gas (Gas and Electric fuels) and BT where I have broadband 1 (10GB use) and evening and weekend calls. Plus of course, the Railforms UK site. I do not download any films or music.

I live extremely near to the BT exchange and I have never had a problem of any sort...I have the Black 2.0 router that BT supplied. I saw this thread and ran a BT speedtester test and the results were:-

19054 kbps.....download
828 kbps.....upload

This seems OK to me, for what I use the internet for.

Hi, did a bit of googling on the product you mention and it looks like a good un.

I am a bit miffed because I have just bought a new dongle (ZTE MF112).

There was some mention on the web about 3 offering a £10(ish) discount for an upgrade against an existing dongle (I am on PAYG), is this something you have come across?

Take a look at mine at post #17..... ;)

What on Earth do you do with all that speed? Surely the temptation is there to stream a load of useless stuff.

btw, you can click "Share this Result" to get the BBCode to paste in the image :p

Wow, didn't know my own thread could get so popular! Anyway, my bandwidth speed has gone upto 6.94 Mbps! Phoned BT and they said my speed would get up to this, didn't believe them though! :/

Yes, £59.99 instead of £69.99 to upgrade to the E367. Quite expensive, but it is a lot quicker, and will get even quicker as Three rolls out HSPA+ throughout the network (offering speeds of upto 21.6MBps).

In a few years we'll get 4G which will offer even more, but I do wonder how much speed anyone really needs. Most sites (and ISPs) will have to regulate and control speeds, so you're unlikely to get the full speed a lot of the time even if speed tests look nice!

They won't have to but they will so they can extort more money. Speed is little more than a mask while ISPs stealthily get net neutrality repealed. Controlling access (speeds) to sites is basically censorship

If you're legally downloading content, you might want it as quickly as possible and you'll probably get it, but most websites are going to want to balance the load and restrict the speeds to manage more users, so you really won't gain much by having 50-100Mbps.

Even speedtest.net will point out that there are many other factors to consider, like ping times/latency, besides raw best-case-scenario speeds.

Thanks; I'll look at that tomorrow; didn't realise - I thought everyone was screenshotting then cropping...

Is this a good time to say our speed is actually moderated down to 100Mb?;) ( The company has its own servers and a direct fibre optic link into the backbone of the internet... )

And no, as it's a works connection I will not be using it to download or stream useless things!

Here's my humble ADSL line; not quite as good as almost 13Mbps on Three.
