Grrrrr.Red rag to a bull this one.I can only gaze in awe at the adverts offering speeds I can only dream about.I keep being told that nothing works properly because I live in a rural area,yea right,a quarter of a mile outside the M25.
I complained to my last isp that my broadband had slowed to little better than dial up and was told thats all I was getting so I told them to stuff it and cancelled the direct debit,now what part of 'take me to court' do debt collectors not understand.
Using mobile broadband at the moment,a bit limited 15 gig/month but faster than anything I ever had,about 2.2 meg download speed.
BT is nothing better than 'post office telephones'with knobs on and I will also have my landline disconnected this month as all you can hear is crackle and hiss on it.

Don't ask me how I got 8.28mbps from a connection speed of 6.8mbps (from my Livebox configuration page) .... I'm not complaining though!

The time is takes for a packet of data to go from your router to the server and back again. Lower is better

If you want an easy explanation if the Ping function, find a network cable and plug it in to both your machine and another machine (if you have two or more, as I do, it's that much easier). Find the program called "cmd" (use the Run function on XP or the Search function on Vista/7), and then when loaded type in "ping" followed by a space and then the other machine's local IP number (which can be altered easily through the network connections). If the connection is active, each machine will "ping" the other four times, and give you a reading of the connection speed.

I am on talk talk and have found my internet has been very slow sometimes, especially when trying to watch videos on youtube or megavideo. I have also lost the connection a fews as well for now reason at all.
I must admit talk talk are no help at all especially if you get some foreign person answering the phone.

At over 30 MB/s, I'm fairly happy with Virgin Media.

especially for online gaming! Lower the ping, the less delay there is in your actions. Nothing worse the pulling the trigger to shoot somebody only for them to move away before you actually pull the trigger due to the high ping.

I was on BT costs about £18 for upto 8mb before I changed, and my actual download rate was about 2.5mb.
Changed to O2 £12.5 for upto 8mb (price my have changed now) really happy when I got and still am getting 6mb download had no problems.
1 tip for everyone with broadband through telephone not cable, try to make sure your router is in the first socket into the house and not an extention, it does help a little.
