Indeed, there is plenty of evidence of thermal print on CCST stock fading - railcards and season tickets, for example. There is no reason why another type of paper (as in PRT) should be any different.
But what makes Thermal print better, given it fades?

The printers are cheaper, more reliable and able to print better quality than, for example, dot matrix ever could be. The downside is that the image tends to face with time or exposure to heat or certain chemicals.

Could dot metric printers be made more reliable and cheaper?

Nope. Dot matrix printers need ink ribbons, thermal printers just need treated paper, and they have moving parts where thermal printers have none.

And because of needing ribbons (or for other types of printer needing ink cartridges) the printers will be bulkier and will incur the additional cost of consumables.
