The "pep" is a prototype and the 313 was built of of it.. I know it's not a pep it's just a nickname
Ahh, really? That explains why the member I was thinking of says 313/314/315/507/508 aren't PEPs, because PEP means the prototype. I never knew that; you learn something new every day.

The 377/3s aren't an enormous upgrade from the 313s as the cream walls and gaudy sapphire blue lower panels look very dated, as does the oval shaped P.I.S., and the /3s and early /1s (and almost all 375s) have that sort of B.O.esque smell, which is less notable on other 377 classes. Still, there's toilets and temperature control, and half-tables are better than no tables.

The more accurate descriptor for those classes would be "PEP-derivative".

Yes, indeed. Fortunately, we shouldn't have a need to refer to them at all very soon, when we are blessed with universal air-conditioned trains on the Southern and Merseyrail networks at long last. :D

I'll very much miss them though

The motors are amazing aspecially on 313202 and 220

Will 313201 always be at york or will it leave there at any time for a railtour or something

Has 211 been in service recently?

It definitely is the worst looking unit on the outside, not sure about inside

313208 has the best-sounding motors in my opinion. My last ride on it was on the Portsmouth fasts, putting those loud motors to excellent use; superb ride too. It is Southern's answer to Merseyrail's 507008.

Mentioned before, but for clarity's sake, PEP can't possibly be the correct family name for these as it stands for Prototype Electro-Pneumatic (brake); the 445s and 446s were the PEPs. 'PEP-derived' is about as good as it's going to get as there is no official family name.

Compressor on that is knackered though.. apparently can't do over 60mph

I think 220 & 202 sounds awesome

207 sounds probably the most "normal"

313218 sounds amazing

Yes

According to this thread 206 hasn’t come out for a while.

Does anyone know where it is?

Selhurst?

Is the shape of the PIS really import! As long as it gives the correct info
Yes

The train works well, gives correct infomation well and led the job with ease unlike 313s

I am sure customers won’t care what shape the PIS is and I am more certain that they will like a change of train rather than the usual 313.

Exactly, that’s why I was so surprised the shape of the PIS was even mentioned as being outdated by the OP!

The PIS isn’t an issue as such, I’m just mentioning it as one of the factors that make the 377/3 and early /1 seem so dated by comparison to /4.

Excuse these blurry Internet photos, but this

looks considerably more dated than this, which I put down mainly to the interior colours. Still, very trivial points I know and still better than a 313.

I think the general consensus is they are all in a bad way and need putting out their misery!!
Yes of course

No point having a competition about which one looks worse! They all are!

I agree entirely, it's more just a hope that the 377/3 and early /1 will be brought into line with the other first generation 377s as part of the refurbishment.
