The East London line, which passes through Whitechapel, used to be a London Underground line connecting a short link between Shoreditch, New Cross and New Cross Gate.

Bolton is one of those stations which used to have a suffix to its name but later lost it following the closure of another nearby station originally being Bolton Trinity Street. In much the same way Gravesend used to be Gravesend Central.
